Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming to Australia

A series of fantasy novels by J.K. Rowling have come to worldwide recognition with blockbuster films.

And the fandom is set to continue, with the eighth story, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, heading exclusively to Melbourne in 2019, for a stage adaptation.

While casting and dates are yet to be announced, it’s a major coup for the Victorian capital city, following on from performances in London’s West End and Broadway.

The Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, proudly took to Twitter on Tuesday, to make the announcement.

He wrote: ‘I have big news. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming exclusively to Melbourne, Victoria in early 2019.’

Presented in two parts and to play at the Princes Theatre, the fantasy story will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The story follows the relationship between Harry Potter, now a Ministry of Magic employee, and his young son Albus Severus Potter, who is about to commence at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Albus finds difficulty in coming to terms with the family legacy.

Producers said in an official statement: ‘When we embarked on this journey, it was an objective to ensure we could get the production to Australia as soon as logistically possible.

‘You can’t ever assume a new play is going to have a further life, but we knew that if Harry Potter and the Cursed Child did have a life beyond London and Broadway, that the next stop would be here.’  

The film adaptations have helped forged the careers of actors Daniel Radcliffe, 28, and Emma Watson, 27.

Daniel who took on the lead role of Harry Potter, has gone on to star in films such as Swiss Army Man, Imperium and Kill Your Darlings.

Emma has featured in Beauty and the Beast, The Bling Ring and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, as well as landing beauty endorsement deals.
