Harry Redknapp labels Manchester United’s deadline-day signing of Edinson Cavani as ‘desperate’

‘Signing Cavani smacked of desperation to me’: Harry Redknapp slams Manchester United’s deadline-day signing of ex-PSG star and £200,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford

  • The transfer window proved to be a difficult period for Manchester United
  • The Old Trafford side missed out on a host of targets including Jadon Sancho
  • At the last minute on deadline-day, United bagged Edinson Cavani on a free
  • Harry Redknapp was unimpressed, arguing that the move was a panic buy

Harry Redknapp has stuck the boot into Manchester United after his old club, Spurs, smashed them 6-1, calling their deal for Edinson Cavani ‘desperate’.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was visibly frustrated throughout the window as United botched negotiations with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho, before the club pulled-off three deals on deadline-day.

Youngsters Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo arrived with hours to spare alongside 33-year-old PSG legend Cavani on a free transfer.

Redknapp joined those criticising the last gasp deal, with the likes of Gary Neville also sceptical.

‘Signing Cavani, 33, on over £200,000 a week on the final day of the transfer window did smack of desperation to me,’ the former Spurs boss told the Sun.

‘I had people telling me eight weeks ago he was keen to come to England. When I heard the wages I just wished them good luck.

‘If he was someone United were that keen on signing, why did they leave it so late?

Cavani is PSG's all-time record goalscorer with 200 and could be deadly if he finds his form

‘Cavani has been a great player over the years and if he’s still got the hunger and the talent, then he’ll do a good job for them.

‘I hope for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sake he is because they certainly cannot afford any more displays like that one against Spurs.

‘The worrying thing was a few of them seemed to throw in the towel.’

Cavani is PSG’s record goalscorer with 200 finishes in Paris, 44 strikes ahead of Swedish great Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Injuries and Mauro Icardi forced Cavani out of the PSG starting line-up last season, making just seven starts and scoring only four goals in Ligue 1.

The last time Cavani dipped below 16 goals for a league season was 2009-10, but 18 goals in 21 games in 2018-19 suggests the Uruguayan could still have a big impact in Manchester.
