Harry Styles enjoys a VERY raucous night at the Met Gala

Harry Styles delighted fans as he co-chaired the Met Gala 2019 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday, after storming the pink carpet.

And his followers were sure to be sent into a spin once more, as videos from inside the venue showed him enjoying the night’s event and helping create a lively atmosphere for guests.

One video saw the 25-year-old singer clap and sing along as Cher performed Believe on stage with an array of back-up dancers.

Harry also seemed to be having a great time while up on the decks with a DJ during the Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom Room in New York for the event’s after-party.

While up there, Harry danced without a care in the world before he walked up to the performer and shouted an expletive at him to show his delight at the set he put on.

Another behind-the-scenes clip showed him deftly walking backwards and off the stage to make way for performers as they got ready to present a musical number.

While another video shared from one of the One Direction star’s fan accounts showcased his excellent hosting skills as he could be heard welcoming everyone by saying ‘guys, gals, non-binary pals’ as guests glided down the runway.

Prior to the event, Harry took into consideration the event’s Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, and pulled out all the stops in a semi-sheer black lace ensemble, one dangling pearl earring and heels.

Arriving alongside Gucci’s designer, Alessandro Michele, the British hitmaker, who is part of this year’s Met Gala committee, looked in high spirits as he posed away on the red carpet.

The 1D star got his ears pierced specifically for the occasion, according to his friend and stylist Harry Lambert.

Harry told Miss Vogue: “It was the perfect final touch for the outfit… Harry and I have discussed previously piercing his ears, and this was the perfect time. I text him and he replied, saying “Let’s do it”.

‘Harry has always been keen to experiment with fashion and is never scared to try something new….

‘It has been a natural progression of experimentation that has led up to the look and where we are today.’

Meanwhile, Harry admitted it was an ‘honour’ to have been asked to co-chair fashion’s biggest night, adding ‘it’s nice to be here’.

Asked what camp means to him, he told Vogue.com: ‘I think it’s about enjoyment and fun, no judgement, having fun with clothes, I think fashion is supposed to be fun and it’s a good time for that right now, people being themselves.’

Harry’s red carpet companion Alessandro was the mastermind behind the incredible design of his eye catching look.

The outfit was styled by Harry Lambert, who spared no expense when it came to accessorising the outfit.

He styled his look with a plethora of chunky statement rings, including two big gold rings which bore his initials H and S on the front.

His nails were designed by Jenny Nails, who opted for black and turquoise tones to complement Harry’s ensemble.

Later in the evening Harry switched up his look, trading his sheer blouse for a white one, complete with a huge red bow tie. He also exchanged his pearl earring for a gold and black cross.

Harry was joined by designer Alessandro, who also made a stylish statement in a ruffled pink head-to-toe ensemble.

The creative added to the eye-catching look with a silver headband, which tamed her long brunette locks in place.

This year, the exhibit and gala are dedicated to the idea of ‘camp,’ as defined by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp.’

The Met Gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is always chaired by a team of high-wattage celebrities, and this year is no exception.

The event is chaired by pop star and actress-of-the-moment Lady Gaga, tennis star Serena Williams, and singer Harry Styles, along with Gucci designer Alessandro Michele and, as always, Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Inside the invite-only Met Gala: Anna Wintour approves the guest list… and stars pay $35,000 per seat

The annual Met Gala extravaganza raises money for the museum’s Costume Institute kicks off the Met’s annual major fashion exhibition — look out, because the theme is ‘camp.’

And the more outrageous the outfit, the better for the Met Gala red carpet, where the A-listers strut their stuff, usually in the most eye-popping ensemble they can find to match the theme.

Last year, Rihanna showed up in full papal-esque regalia, and Madonna wore a regal black gown – with a see-through cross in the bodice – to go along with the ‘Heavenly Bodies’ concept.

Want a seat? They go for $35,000 a piece.

Attendance is by invitation only, and word has it that Vogue editor extraordinaire Anna Wintour has the final say over each person on the guest list.

Organizers did reveal a smattering of names last month — members of the so-called ‘host committee’ — and so expect to see Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Katy Perry and Priyanka Chopra.

Wintour co-chairs the event this year with an eclectic mix of boldface names — Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, pop diva Lady Gaga, British singer Harry Styles and tennis superstar Serena Williams.

Wintour said she believes this year’s Met Gala to be about ‘self expression’ and ‘individuality’, noting that she wanted to see ‘outrageous, fun, tongue in cheek’ fashion on the red carpet.

Attendance is by invitation only, and word has it that Vogue editor extraordinaire Anna has the final say over each person on the guest list.

The new theme seems decidedly more lighthearted than last year’s hugely successful Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, about the relationship between fashion and Catholicism.

Met Gala 2019 theme: So what does ‘Notes on Camp’ mean…?

So what exactly is ‘camp’?

The museum’s exhibition is based on ‘Notes on Camp,’ an essay written in 1964 by American author Susan Sontag.

‘Camp is by nature subversive (…) confronting and challenging the status quo,’ the Costume Institute’s head curator Andrew Bolton said Monday at a press event about the exhibition before the gala.

‘In the end, the purpose of camp is to put a smile on our faces and a warm glow in our hearts.’

Some of the items in the exhibition might best explain the theme: the ‘swan dress’ worn by Bjork to the Oscars, a glittering costume worn by flamboyant US singer Liberace, a shower head necklace designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe in the 1980s.

‘We’re experiencing a resurgence of camp — not just in fashion, but in culture in general,’ said Bolton.

‘Camp tends to come to the fore in moments of social and political instability. The 1960s was one such moment as were the 1980s.’

The exhibition ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ — a play on the title of Sontag’s essay — formally opens at the Met on Thursday and runs through September 8.
