Have you got Rich Mum Energy? The telltale signs

Forget being a Yummy Mummy, there’s a new parenting genre, albeit niche, to aspire to: Rich Mum Energy.

The first rule? If you’ve got it, flaunt it quietly.

Coined in the US (Rich Mom Energy) by British-born TikTokker Tinx, and now neatly abbreviated to RME, access to this very exclusive club majors on ‘stealth wealth’.

Being understated about millions sitting pretty in the bank is the hallmark of RME…and it’s been perfectly exhibited by a handful of famous faces in recent months.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s appearances in a Utah court room, over that ski collision, offered an RME masterclass, some might say.

A cosy cashmere jumper one day, a positively casual cream turtleneck the next – all very understated, had they not cost £1,300 between them.

Add in the quiet revelation that each of her children with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin – Apple and Moses – had their own personal ski instructor during the trip in question and it all feels very, well, Rich Mum Energy.

Which other high-profile parents find themselves in the highest echelons of parenting vibes?

Gisele Bündchen, Amal Clooney, Gina Coledangelo and PM Rishi Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty might all comfortably qualify.

Here, FEMAIL examines exactly what trappings might suggest RME:

RICH MUM ENERGY: THE TELLTALE SIGNS

DONS UNDERSTATED ATTIRE

How to master quiet luxury while wearing couture? Those emitting Rich Mum Energy aren’t afraid of casual attire – as per Gwyneth’s snug courtroom knits – but the finer details are often the marker of extreme wealth.

The Prime Minister’s wife, venture capitalist and mother-of-two Ashkata Murty, managed to look disarmingly casual while snapped carrying a take-out earlier this year – yet simultaneously sporting suede slippers by JW Anderson, which retail at around £570.

And when Gina Coladangelo jetted back into Heathrow Airport following Matt Hancock’s appearance on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! last year, she managed to exude Rich Mum Energy despite being in the air for the best part of 24 hours, donning an expensive-looking green coat over a designer jumper with high-zip detail and a pair of Vans.

LOVES A BLOW DRY

Whatever the weather, or the occasion – be it a children’s football match or a work event, a buoyant blow-dry is a sure sign of RME.

Administered by a personal stylist three times a week, it ensures locks are bouncy and lustrous at all times.

Like a Celine bag, or Fendi shades in tortoiseshell, it’s considered an essential for those embracing the Rich Mum lifestyle.

HAS A DOG WALKER

Pedigree pooches are a firm fixture in well-heeled families and Rich Mum Energy ensures their every whim is attended to. Forget doggy daycare, a hound with a rich mum is likely to have their own dedicated dog nanny. This particular employee will attend to their every canine whim, from ensuring their diet is organic and luxe to making sure they’re exercised twice a day and groomed to fluffy perfection.

EMPLOYS MORE THAN ONE NANNY

If you’ve got more than one child, then why not ensure their individual needs are met with their own personal nanny?

As larger broods have become increasingly popular, so the need for impeccable childcare has also increased amongst those with the funds to finance such roles.

A high-end nanny can anticipate a six-figure sum, with other perks including first class travel.

While many Rich Mums go for a rotating night nanny and a day nanny to ensure 24 hour coverage, others simply employ a crack team of full-time childcare experts who barely leave the sides of their employer’s offspring.

British actress Anna Friel once remarked that she owed her career to the two nannies she hired to look after daughter Gracie where she was young, saying: ‘Apart from my mother and my grandmother those two ladies are the ones I respect more than anything I can think of. They have given me everything.’

DRIVES A LOW-KEY – BUT LUXURY – CAR

The school run? While the less modest monied might traditionally favour a Range Rover, a Mercedes G-Class or even an all-out supercar…those with RME aren’t quite so thirsty for wheels so obviously associated with a luxury lifestyle. Instead, they might drive their brood (or even more RME, be driven) to school in something a little less obvious. Low-key luxury Japanese brand Lexus has become the go-to for those wanting a five-star ride, with the planet-helping smaller models in the Tesla range also a popular choice.

HAS A PERSONAL TRAINER

There will be an expensive gym membership, of course, coupled with boutique fitness classes but the fitness mainstay for anyone with Rich Mum Energy is the personal trainer, who doubles up as a therapist, and, very possibly, a lover.

Alongside thrice weekly plank sessions, and bleep tests in the garden, a PT is likely to help with nutrition too. They’ll encourage vegan-veering dishes that incorporate the latest health fad – but will also be able to mix a mean post-session Negroni; fabulous cocktails and Rich Mum Energy are not mutually exclusive.

AND A TENNIS COACH…

There’s a different personal coach for each specific pursuit but nothing screams Rich Mum Energy like a private tennis coach. Often associated with a regal lawn tennis or private members club, such as Queens, said coach will spend an hour batting balls back and forth – with Elton John likely on the court next door – and help organise Centre Court tickets at Wimbledon when July comes.

REGAL SKI HOLIDAYS

Classic destinations dominate the RME holiday wish-list. If it’s winter in Europe, then ski like a royal, in mountain resorts such as Gstaad, Davos and St Moritz in Switzerland, or St Anton in Austria. With an entire team of ski instructors on hand to ensure the best pistes are accessed.

Across the Pond, you’ll find RME swooshing down the slopes of Aspen and Vail in Colorado, and Whistler in Canada.

IDYLLIC ISLAND JAUNTS

When the mercury hots up, Ibiza’s tiny little sister, Formentera, offers those in the know the chance to shrug off mass tourism and enjoy a more exclusive take on the Mediterranean summer.

A converted trullo house in Puglia, or a room at Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Antibes might also do the trick. The Caribbean continues to woo those with RME but again, mainstream is firmly off the map. The British Virgin Islands, St Barts and Belize are the kind of balmy destination a more initiated upper class parent might pick.

Seasons are bridged with rural jaunts in the Cotswolds or Burnham Market in North Norfolk, and city breaks to Edinburgh, Tribeca (New York) and Como.
