A hazardous material has reportedly been found on board an American Airlines plane at Sydney airport.

Seven fire crews are at the scene, prepared to assist with a hazardous material incident, a New South Wales Fire and Rescue spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

The first crews arrived just after 8am. 

It is not yet clear what the hazardous material may be or whether the American Airlines plane had landed or was preparing to take off.
