Jamie Theakston has shared a loving tribute to his mother after finding out she had died on the morning of Christmas Eve.

The Heart FM DJ, 52, has been in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, in the build-up to the Christmas period and last night he watched the northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis.

But on Saturday morning he sadly was handed the news that his beloved mum had passed away, and he shared a picture of the beautiful dancing waves of light to commemorate how ‘spectacular she was’.

Writing to his 48,000 Instagram followers on Saturday afternoon, Jamie penned: ‘So after a night in awe of the Aurora Borealis, I woke up to the news my mother had died.

‘I’m not a religious person, but I think it’s fair to say her pathway to heaven was as spectacular as she was.

‘I love you mum’. 

Friends and fans came to his aid with messages of support, including former footballer Jamie Redknapp who said: ‘Thinking of you mate ❤️’.

GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes, who recently lost his mother, added: ‘So sorry Jamie – It’s the phonecall we all dread.

‘Just been through it myself. Sincere Condolences.’

Former Scottish rugby union player Thom Evans penned: ‘Very sorry for your loss mate x’.

This Morning host Dermot O’Leary similarly added: ‘So sorry Jamie x’.

His co-star on Heart Radio, Ashley Roberts, said: ‘Sending so much love’.

Jamie, who hails from Cuckfield in West Sussex but lives in London with his wife Sophie Theakston, who runs a jewellery brand, and their two children, is best known for hosting Top of the Pops back in the day.

His breakfast show which he previously hosted with former Spice Girl Emma Bunton and now Amanda Holden is in the primetime slot for Heart FM London from 6.30am until 10am and he also narrates BBC’s Traffic Cops and Motorway Cops. 

Jamie also just celebrated his 52nd birthday on 21st December.

Recently, the TV and radio presenter recreated Christmas movie scenes including Bridget Jones’ Diary, The Holiday and Elf in Heart Breakfast’s 12 Scenes of Christmas.

He appeared in good spirits and was looking ahead to celebrating the Christmas season with his loved ones while finishing up his last shifts at work.
