Heartbroken daughter shares photo of three men on a roof

A heartbroken daughter has shared a photo of her father sitting on a roof with his boss and a workmate, staring down at a lumber yard.

Emily Jay Millar described the scene as devastating, and it was later shared by her sister Sam to a local Facebook group in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The haunting image shows the girls’ father and the two other men sitting on the top of a corrugated iron roof, looking away from the camera.

The trio were looking down at the Valley Lumber yard on McLeod’s Road in the Dunedin suburb of Burnside as it went up in flames on Wednesday afternoon.

‘Man it’s utterly devastating watching a grown man a cry watching his business in flames,’ said Ms Millar.

‘All him and his workers including my dad can do is sit there helpless and hope for the best outcome. So so sad.’

Her sister Sam posted the same image with caption: ‘My father, his boss and workmate look towards the timber yard in Kaikorai Valley that his boss owns.’

‘Watching it go up in flames. Just devastating. So many emotions in one photo. Heart wrenching seeing grown men cry.’

Owner Peter Chalmers estimated up to $300,000 worth of stock was destroyed in the blaze, which consumed 2000tonnes of timber, Radio NZ reported.

Mr Chalmers said the flames reached a height of 30metres, and the fire was burning out of control within minutes.

‘I know probably my firewood stock has gone. I don’t know about my building. I’ve got a lot of dry timber and strip stack throughout the yard,’ he said.

‘I personally think the whole lot will be gone.’

Six helicopters fought the blaze alongside 12 fire engines and crews who worked through the night to contain the flames.

By early Thursday morning the fire was out but smoke was still rising from the ashes of the lumber yard and burnt industrial buildings.
