  • Tszyu stopped Ocampo in just 77 seconds

Tim Tszyu’s mother was pictured comforting Carlos Ocampo after her son knocked the Mexican fighter out in just 77 seconds on Sunday afternoon to retain his WBO interim super-welterweight title.

Risking it all, Tszyu produced a stunning display of firepower to successfully defend the belt he claimed with a extraordinary ninth-round stoppage of American Tony Harrison in Sydney in March.

A self-confessed ‘obsessed’ Tszyu knocked Ocampo out in barely a minute in a ferocious performance at the Gold Coast Convention Centre to send a chilling warning to undisputed world champion Jermell Charlo.

Tszyu needed just 77 seconds to get the victory, after knocking Ocampo down with a right hand and sealing the deal with a vicious left hook that left the Mexican down on the canvas.

After the bout, while Tszyu was being interviewed by media, his mother Natalia could be seen on Main Event broadcast entering Ocampo’s changeroom to comfort him.

Natalia could be then seen embracing Ocampo and putting her hand on his face in a heartwarming gesture.

‘Look at that,’ said commentator Shawn Porter. ‘That’s a mama being a mama right there. They care about everybody.’

Tim Tszyu replied: ‘100 per cent. I could understand what he’s feeling. This is a hostile crowd.

‘This is pretty crazy. To be the outsider, of course it’s intimidating.’

Natalia Tszyu moved to Australia from Russia with former world champion Kostya Tszyu in 1992 and the pair shared three children: Anastasia, Tim and Nikita.

However, their marriage broke down in 2008 and Kostya returned to Russia where he has now built a business empire, re-married and had two more children.

Natalia chose to stay in Australia and raise her children as a single mum and hasn’t regretted the decision.

Tszyu was last month ordered to fight Charlo before October 1 for the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF belts after the pair’s scheduled January 29 showdown was postponed at Christmas when the American broke two bones in his right hand.

That blockbuster bout would have been canned had Tszyu lost to Ocampo, 22 days after needing emergency surgery for a nasty dog bite to his right forearm.

Typically, though, Tszyu once again rose to the occasion to confirm his date with destiny against Charlo with the most astonishing performance of his career, extending his undefeated record to 23 wins from 23 fights with a 17th KO.

‘I’ve got a question,’ Tszyu said after the win.

‘What’s my mother-f***ing name?

‘There’s no doubt I’m going to America, that’s the land I want to conquer.

‘I’m not satisfied with his interim belt – I want all four and I want the name Charlo on my resume.’
