Henley Regatta revellers quaff Champagne straight from the bottle

Now that’s a booze cruise! Champagne-quaffing revellers show posh Henley Royal Regatta isn’t quite as genteel as you might expect as they party on the Thames

  • Hundreds of people celebrated one of the highlights of the social season on board a flotilla of boats 
  • Some 650 crews have registered to participate in the competitive side of the weekend’s festivities

As the sun began setting in the western skies over Henley-upon-Thames yesterday, revellers at the society event of the year seemed to have enjoyed the Champagne on offer. 

Young men and women could be seen swigging straight from bottles sitting on the riverbank and on board various small craft. 

Armed police passed up and down the river onboard a rigid inflatable boat, providing a constant reminder of the possible threat to major events. 

Some 650 crews have registered to participate in this weekend’s event which is one of the highlights of the social season.  

These two ladies sat on the riverbank overlooking the Thames after the last race yesterday at the Henley Regatta. One of the revellers dispensed, not only with her shoes, but her Champagne flute as well, and swigged straight from the bottle

Prime Minister Theresa May took time out of her farewell tour to watch today’s action at Henley Regatta. 

Mrs May arrived with her husband Philip at the society event as her days in Number 10 approach an end. 

Henley-upon-Thames is only a short distance from her home village of Sonning in her Maidenhead constituency.
