Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa’s spy thriller Argylle gets February 2024 release date from Apple Original Films and Universal Pictures

Fans eagerly awaiting the feature film acting debut of global pop star Dua Lipa in the spy thriller Argylle finally have a date to circle on the calendar next year.

Apple Original Films – which picked up the rights to the film back in August 2021 – are teaming up with Universal Pictures for a theatrical release on February 2, 2024, via THR.

The film will go up against Warner Bros.’ mob drama Wise Guys with Robert De Niro and Debra Messing and Lionsgate’s horror film Imaginary with Betty Buckley.

Apple released a first look image with Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa back in March 2022, though it’s unclear when the first trailer may debut.

The film marks just the latest high-profile feature project that Apple is teaming up with a theatrical distributor for.

Apple has also teamed with Sony for director Ridley Scott’s historical biopic Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix, set for release on November 22.

The streaming service also teamed up with Paramount for Martin Scorsese’s highly-anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, in theaters October 6.

This has marked a major shift from most streaming services, which, until this year, had rarely given their movies theatrical release dates, unless it has an exclusive theatrical window.

The windows typically last between 30 and 45 days, which Amazon used for their feature film Air before it debuted on their Prime Video streaming service.

The film is described as following, ‘the world’s greatest spy, Argylle,’ who ‘gets caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.’

The film was first announced in June 2021, with Matthew Vaughn directing from a script by Jason Fuchs, adapted from a yet-to-be-published novel by a mysterious writer named Elly Conway.

The writer seemingly hasn’t published a book before, with the Argylle novel’s publication originally set for September 29, 2022 and then pushed to March 29, 2023 and now apparently set for November 9, 2023.

Apple announced in August 2021 they had acquired the rights to the film for a whopping $200 million, with Vaughn offering his thoughts on the unpublished manuscript in the announcement.

‘When I read this early draft manuscript I felt it was the most incredible and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s books of the ‘50s,’ Vaughan said.

The director added, ‘This is going to reinvent the spy genre,’ though very little about the actual author is known.

The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose and Rob Delaney.

Little is known about Dua Lipa’s character, but she will first be seen in the highly-anticipated Barbie movie in an unknown role, in theaters July 21.
