Heroic grandmother, 75, holds car theft suspect at gunpoint in her front yard

An Alabama grandmother proved looks can be deceiving when she helped detain an on-the-run car thief suspect on Monday by holding him at gun point in her front yard until deputies could arrive.

Cameron Powers had been evading arrest for more than four hours after crashing a stolen car in Limestone County during a high-speed chase with cops.

Wrecking the vehicle close the home of Marcia Black, 75, the grandmother went outside to investigate the source of the noise and ended up being lauded as a hero.

‘I walked out and said, “Can I help you?” And he said, “yes ma’am, I’d like to use your phone,” Black told WAAY.

‘I wanted to keep him at a distance,’ Black said. ‘I didn’t intend to kill him. I just wanted him to think that I would shoot him.’

But Black’s resolve was tested when Powers began inching his way closer to her home, where her 15-year-old granddaughter was watching from the window.

Powers allegedly refused several of Black’s requests to stop moving and to get down on the ground.

She ensured his compliance by firing a warning shot into the air, prompting the assailant to get down onto his knees with his hands on his head.

‘[Then] he realized I meant business,’ Black said. ‘I was as calm as can be; I knew what I was doing. I was in control.’

The pair squared-off silently for several minutes before deputies arrived at the scene, prompting powers to leap back up to his feet and scarper into an over-grown field.

But he didn’t get very far before officers tackled him to the ground and placed him into handcuffs.

Black’s granddaughter, Allie Ruth Black, says she watched on in awe as her grandmother nonchalantly contained the apparent criminal.

‘It was just amazing to me that I got to witness my grandmother in action,’ she said, adding that it was her who called the police while her grandma was locked in the stand-off.

Powers has since been charged with auto theft and attempting to elude. He was soon after booking into the Limestone County jail and issued a $6,000 bond.

Powers was no longer in custody as of Wednesday night.

Marcia Black is the mother of Limestone County District Three Commissioner Jason Black, and Allie Ruth is his daughter, WAAY reported.

‘It’s just another day,’ Black told the station, reflecting on the dramatic chain of events. ‘If something happens, you take care of it and that’s it.’
