This is the amazing moment a lioness attacks a wild heron that lands in its enclosure in a zoo.

Siwa Sardjoemissier captured the moment the heron was pounced on when vising Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The lion can be seen waiting patiently in a shaded cave as the camera pans round to a heron with a fish in its mouth.

Instinct kicks in and the lion pounces towards the bird which tries in a flurry to fly away

The big cat can be seen slowly stalking the bird and come to a stop under a tree just metres away from where it stands.

A few moments pass as the hungry lion eyes up its prey and waits for the best moment to attack.

Gasps of shock can be heard from visitors as another lion runs towards the lioness in delight at the prize catch.

The big cat parades around its enclosure with the unlucky heron and holds it in its mouth to be eaten.

This comes after a lioness was been shot dead at a Belgian zoo after escaping from its enclosure.

Up to 40 people were forced to hide in a gift shop at Planckendael zoo, 19 miles north of Belgian capital Brussels, while the emergency unfolded this morning.

School children were kept inside a bus in the car park while desperate attempts were made to bring the animal under control.

But staff eventually had to kill the lioness after two attempts at sedating it proved unsuccessful, according to Belgian media.
