High-flying TV executive is sacked ‘after drunken Rugby World Cup bust-up when she told international star Mike Phillips that if it wasn’t for her no one would know who he was’

A high-flying TV executive at has been sacked after hurling drunken abuse at a sports commentator at the Rugby World Cup in France.

Mother-of-two, Llinos Griffin-Williams, 40, was headhunted into the £150,000 a year role of chief content officer at S4C – Channel 4 in Wales – last April. 

But just over a year later has been dismissed over ‘gross misconduct’ after she was allegedly abusive to ex-Wales rugby player and TV pundit Mike Phillips at an after party following the Wales vs Georgia rugby match last Saturday. 

Miss Griffin-Williams is reported to have been obviously drunk at the French bar and screamed at Mr Phillips that if it wasn’t for her no one would know who he was, adding that his Welsh wasn’t good enough.

A senior S4C source said: ‘When they got to the venue, Llinos Griffin-Williams was abusive towards members of the Whisper team including Mike Phillips, who is one of the pundits.

‘She was clearly very drunk and told them that they wouldn’t get any more contracts to make programmes for S4C.

‘She went on to say that her job at S4C was to make sure that big production companies like Whisper got less work from the channel.

‘Llinos Griffin-Williams was personally abusive to Mike Phillips, saying things like if it wasn’t for her no one would know who he was. She also told him that his Welsh wasn’t good enough.’

The rugby legend, who is Wales’ most-capped scrum half and used to date pop star Duffy, left the after party to go to another location, but Miss Griffin-Williams turned up there as well and allegedly ‘resumed her abusive comments’.

The publicly-funded broadcaster, which receives £88m from licence fees each year, is currently being investigated over further allegations of its ‘toxic culture’ after a string of complaints from employees.

A probe was launched in May after staff described living in fear at the TV channel.

Bectu Union’s Wales Negotiations Officer, Carwyn Donovan reported that staff were ‘regularly being brought to tears’ and ‘too scared to share their experiences’.

He claimed staff complained of ‘being ignored, belittled, undermined, or patronised by members of the management team’.

His open letter continued that senior managers were ‘aggressive and confrontational’ if workers raised legitimate questions.

S4C has been approached for a formal statement.

The 40-year-old Welsh language broadcaster is where One Show host Alex Jones and Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans first rose to fame, and was the first home of both SuperTed and Fireman Sam.
