High school football coach and PE teacher Nicholas Federico, from Oregon, has been charged with sex abuse, online sexual corruption of a child and official misconduct

A high school football coach form Oregon has been arrested on sex abuse and related charges after authorities say a video emerged on Instagram over the summer showing the suspect engaging in a sex act with a student.

Nicholas Federico, 38, from Salem, was taken into custody at Woodburn High School on Monday, and booked into the county jail on counts of second-degree sex abuse, second-degree online sexual corruption of a child and first-degree official misconduct.

Federico teaches physical education and is the head football coach at the school in Woodburn, Oregon – a city of 25,000 located 30 miles southwest of Portland.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, at the end of July, the agency and the Woodburn Police Department received a tip about a video circulating on Instagram allegedly showing a Woodburn High School teacher engaged in ‘an intimate act.’

During the three-month investigation that followed, detectives reportedly uncovered evidence the teacher, identified as Federico, had been messaging at least one student from the school using Snapchat, which led to ‘an intimate relationship’ with the minor, according to the sheriff’s office.

Federico has worked for the Woodburn School District since 2011. In the wake of his arrest, he has been placed on paid administrative leave, reported the station KGW.

‘The District understands that the school community will experience a range of emotions and will provide available resources to support our students, staff and families,’ a district spokesperson said in a statement.

Federico was released from jail on Monday after posting 10 per cent of his $70,000 bail, according to The Statesman Journal.

An arraignment for Federico was initially set for Tuesday, but it has now been rescheduled for November 25.

It is unclear if Federico is currently married, but past social media posts suggest that at least until a few years ago, he had a wife and two young children, a boy and a girl.
