Highest earning careers, the wealthiest suburbs in Australia and jobs where women earn more than men

Australia’s highest and lowest-earning suburbs and professions have been revealed – with those living in richest area making ten times more than those in the poorest.

The ATO’s annual Tax Stats show that out of 1100 occupations there are 72 where women earn more than men, including magistrates, authors and pro surfers.

Medical careers dominate the top-earning jobs in Australia, with surgeons ranking number one followed by anaesthetists and internal medicine specialists.

The top-earning suburb in Australia for the 2016-17 financial year was 2108 covering Coasters Retreat and Palm Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches with an average of $230,330.

Melbourne’s 3142 postcode including Hawksburn and Toorak had the second-highest average taxable income in Australia with $193,904, followed by 2027 covering Sydney’s Darling Point and Point Piper (pictured) with an average of $187,689

Melbourne’s 3142 postcode including Hawksburn and Toorak had the second-highest average taxable income in Australia with $193,904, followed by 2027 covering Sydney’s Darling Point and Point Piper with an average of $187,689.

The lowest-earning area was the 2308 postcode covering the University of Newcastle. The area had an average taxable income of $20,589.  

Five of the 10 lowest-earning postcodes were in Queensland, with 4611 covering Marshlands and Mondure ranking second-lowest with an average income of $23,225.

Watchem, Morton Plains and Massey in Victoria had the third-lowest average taxable income at $24,346.

The most profitable profession in Australia was surgeon, with an average income of $394,866.

Anaesthetists came in second with an average of $367,343 with internal medicine specialists third making $299,378.

Financial dealers were fourth at $261,008 and psychiatrists came in fifth with an average taxable income of $216,075.

ATO deputy commissioner Louise Clarke said it was ‘unsurprising’ that doctors had the highest-earning incomes.

‘One thing that has changed though is five of the 10 bottom-earning postcodes are in Queensland, where last year it was Victoria,’ she told news.com.au.

‘It could could be because some of the postcodes are areas where there are primary producers who may be struggling with drought or natural disaster, or it could be related to some other change in work trends.’ 

The lowest-earning profession was fast-food cook with an average taxable income of $18,616.

Hospitality employees had the second-lowest income at $19,102 followed by hospitality apprentice at $19,282 and then farm, forestry or garden worker apprentices at $19,744.

Farmers came in fifth-lowest for average taxable income with $22,378. 

The lowest-earning job for women was construction and mining with $13,845 while the lowest for men was hospitality apprentice or trainee, making $18,366 on average. 

Women authors earn more than their male counterparts, collecting $85,006 in taxable income compared to $68,342 for men.

Female futures traders earn $315,197 per year while men earn $303,466.

Women magistrates earn $262,152 compared to $255,177 for men, while professional women surfers earn $76,614 and men $48,367.

Female illustrators earn $62,245, higher than men doing the same job who make an average of $58,304.  

Ms Clarke said some anomalies may influence the average when it comes to calculating female salaries. 

‘They might be very small populations, for example female pro sufers earn $76,000 and males earn $48,000, there could be a couple of outliers in the female population that bump the average up,’ she said.

Australians made $3.5billion in charitable donations for the 2016-17 financial year, an average of $770 for each person that donated.

Western Australia was the most generous state, handing out $1190 on average, compared to the lowest in the Northern Territory with an average charitable deduction on taxes of $405. 

The report was based on 16.5million income tax returns and included 970,00 companies.
