Highway horror: Watch as car veers across three lanes of motorway then flips over in shocking dashcam video

  • EXCLUSIVE: Dash cam video shows moment car crashes on A1M towards London
  • Car then ploughs through trees, flips over, and slides down verge

Dashcam footage has captured the horrific moment a car veers across three lanes of a motorway, mounting up grassy bank before flipping and landing on its roof.

A silver hatchback appears on the right-hand side of the video in the lane next to the central reservation only to suddenly zoom across the A1M, near the Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The car then accelerates up the bank, crashes into trees before flipping and sliding down the verge on its roof before coming to a stop on the hard shoulder.

A woman’s panicked voice can be heard saying ‘Oh my God’ in the 30-second clip.

The driver of the vehicle who captured the footage, who wished to remain anonymous, then pulled over onto the hard shoulder before going to help while his wife dialled 999 for an ambulance.

After pulling open the driver door with help from other passersby, the driver was found unconscious and struggling to breathe with his face pressed onto the roof of the upside-down car.

The seat belt was cut, with witnesses keeping the man’s airway clear before emergency services arrived.

‘It wasn’t until after, all the feelings came out,’ he said. ‘My wife in the passenger seat was very upset from the moment it all happened until quite sometime after.

‘I pass the site every day and keep seeing the accident in my mind. It has had an effect on my driving, I always drive slower now.’

The driver had a medical episode during the crash on the southbound carriageway in June. Police did not make any charges.

Bryn Brooker, head of road safety at dash cam manufacturer Nextbase, said: ‘This footage is a vivid reminder of the unexpected events that can occur on our roads and the potential dangers that can arise.

‘Dash cams serve as unbiased witnesses in situations like these, offering a clear and factual account of events. They play a crucial role not only in determining fault but also in providing a comprehensive understanding of how incidents unfold, which can be instrumental in insurance claims and legal proceedings.

‘While the circumstances behind this particular incident may not be immediately apparent from the video alone, it highlights the importance of cautious driving and remaining attentive to the behaviours of others on the road.’
