An NFL photographer unexpectedly took a football to the head during the New York Jets and Washington Commanders’ Christmas Eve game on Sunday.

The hit took place early in the second quarter with the Jets looking to extend a 17-0 lead.

Quarterback Trevor Siemian was standing around the 15 yard line as the Jets were looking for a touchdown. With the Commanders’ covering well, Siemian still found his target, tight end Tyler Conklin, in the end zone.

However, Washington’s Cody Barton did just enough to disrupt the pass. As a result, the ball flew past their hands and struck a photographer in the head.

The photographer, seen wearing an orange beanie, appeared too focused on his shot, not noticing the ball until it was too late.

Two other cameraman, one to his left and the other on the right, saw the pigskin’s trajectory and reacted accordingly.

Despite falling to his back with a hand over his head after the hit, both the photographer and his equipment appeared fine.

‘You see my man in the orange hat take one off the noggin right there,’ NFL Analyst Adam Archuleta said in the broadcast. ‘Stayed in there for that shot.’

‘Looks like he’s okay, before we get some hazard pay for that’, CBS announcer Spero Dedes responded. ‘It’s a dangerous place to be sometimes on an NFL field.’

After the incident, Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein completed a field goal to give New York the 20-0 lead.

Both the Jets and Commanders entered the game with losing records – 5-9 and 4-10, respectively.

The Jets are coming off a 30-0 loss to the Dolphins as the third-placed team in the AFC East.

Meanwhile, the Commanders entered the game on a five-game skid with their last losing effort coming against the Rams. Washington currently sit at the bottom of the NFC East.
