Hilarious moment Panthers star Taylan May gets headbutted where it hurts most by his own teammate

See the hilarious moment Panthers star Taylan May gets headbutted where it hurts most by his own teammate during try celebration

  • It was raining tries at McDonald Jones Stadium as Penrith flogged Newcastle
  • One of the seven tries stood out though, as Izack Tago took out a teammate
  • Rising to his feet, he headbutted young winger Taylan May in a very painful spot
  • It didn’t halt the Panthers charge, though, as they piled on a cricket score

One of the fundamental rules of rugby league taught in juniors is getting your head in the right position.

Someone might need to tell Penrith Panthers centre Izack Tago that applies to teammates, not just tackles.

After scoring a try to put his Panthers up 30-0 in their huge NRL win over Newcastle on Sunday, Tago was quick to get to his feet to celebrate.

Trouble was, teammate Taylan May was standing directly above him and bang, Tago’s head got him right in the crown jewels.

The gloss was quickly taken off the try as May crumpled like a cheap suit, but he soon saw the humour in the incident as teammate Jarome Luai rushed to his aid.

‘[Kalyn Ponga] wasn’t the only head knock in the game, poor old Taylan May, you have a look at this one here, this is particularly nasty,’ Matthew Johns said on his Sunday footy show on Fox Sports.

‘He just jumps and whooshka, it’s the old take away the pain but leave the swelling.’

‘Was that friendly fire?’ Bryan Fletcher asked. ‘Yes it was,’ Johns confirmed.

‘Right in the orchestras. We’ve seen a lot this year, people getting hit down below. It’s not great.’ Fletcher said.

Fortunately the incident didn’t halt May in another dominant performance on the wing for the premiership favourites.

May had 16 runs for 125 metres – including 53 post-contact metres – along with three tackle breaks, a line break and a try.

May and Luai share a laugh after the incident that initially had the winger on the ground in agony after being headbutted in the privates by teammate Izack Tago

The Panthers know they have a good ‘un with May and have re-signed the 20-year-old winger until the end of the 2024 season.

‘It’s an honour to re-sign at the club. It’s always been a dream of mine to play for the Panthers and I’m making it a reality now,’ May said.

‘Having grown up in Mt Druitt, I’m not just playing for myself, but I’m playing for my family and the whole community.

‘The Panthers jersey means a lot to me – I’m humbled and grateful for this opportunity that has been given to me.’
