Historical home in Northcote, Melbourne has been given a chic modern renovation

An Edwardian home in the heart of the suburbs in a major Australian city hides inside it an ultra-chic renovation designed by its star architect owner.

While façade remains true to its early 1900s roots, the modern rear extension blends the old with the new giving the home a cool, contemporary feel.

The stylish pad sits just 20 minutes north of the Melbourne city centre in Northcote and was renovated in 2020 by director of architect and design firm Margo Studio and owner Amy Carroll.

Built from raw materials such as recycled bricks, timber, brass and terracotta, the bespoke extension houses the property’s main living space with a kitchen, lounge, dining room, family area, study nook and alfresco entertaining deck.

The open-plan kitchen flows onto the family space and features a butler’s pantry, curved stone island bench with a breakfast bar, spotted gum cabinetry, green tiled splash-back and luxe brass hardware.

Opening out to the pergola deck and garden through expansive sliding doors is the spacious dining room that is encased with timber textures and has a high angled ceiling.

The split level addition also has a separate sunken sitting room with exposed brick walls, a cosy fireplace, custom-built home office and a window seat with a cafe opening.

Ms Carroll told realestate.com.au, the main living space was ‘strategically designed’ to be incorporated with the backyard that has an outdoor fireplace and is filled with lush native flora.
