Hit and run van driver ploughs into pedestrian in London

A speeding truck ploughed into an elderly pedestrian and ‘knocked him unconscious’ as he crossed the road during a shocking hit and run crash.

The man, believed to be in his 60s, was walking across the busy road in Stamford Hill, north London, when the truck sent him flying.

He suffered head injuries, which paramedics treated at the scene before taking him to hospital.

The Metropolitan Police said no arrests had been made but an investigation into the incident had been launched.

Witnesses, who ran to the victim’s aide, were horrified to see the offending driver then speed away from the scene.

The brutal crash was captured on CCTV and appeared to show the motorist checking up on the stricken man before driving off.

The vehicle reversed until it was alongside the victim, but as passers-by arrived, the truck drove away.

An employee of Dominos pizza take away in Stamford Hill said the elderly man was hit first by the truck’s wing mirror and then smashed his head on the road.

He told the Evening Standard: ‘The collision happened suddenly and it was so bad that the man’s head bashed against the road.

‘The man in the truck reversed and saw what he did then did a U-turn in front of me before driving off. One of his side mirrors had fallen off and I think that’s what hit the man.’

A Met police spokesman confirmed that officers were called to the scene of a van collision with a male pedestrian at around 11.35am on November 18.

He said: ‘The man – aged in his 60s – was taken to hospital. His condition was described as not life-threatening or life-changing.

‘The driver of the van did not stop at the scene. Inquiries continue to identify the driver and establish the full circumstances.

‘There has been no arrest.’
