Hold on tight, Mike! Zippy Zara gets in the driving seat as the Tindalls do Top Gear (and she is used to piling on the horsepower)

  • The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Tindall does a timed lap for BBC1’s Top Gear
  • Zara climbed behind the wheel of a red Toyota GT86 coupé for the show
  • She was seen racing around a test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey

As an Olympic medal-winning three-day event rider, Zara Tindall is used to piling on the horsepower.

And she showed she could do it on four wheels too when she took part in the BBC motoring show Top Gear.

Watched by presenters Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris, Zara competed against husband Mike to see who could go fastest in a Jaguar on the test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

Fearless Zara then climbed behind the wheel of a red Toyota GT86 coupé for the show’s Star In A Reasonably Priced Car feature.

Despite heavy rain, mother-of-two Zara, 38, hurtled around the track, even veering off on several occasions as she put her foot down.

‘She really went for it. She came off the track three or four times,’ said a source. ‘But she wasn’t scared and showed some real bottle. It was very quick for a wet lap.’

After about ten practice runs, Zara was joined by Mike, 40, her husband of eight years, who sat in the passenger seat for her timed lap before they exchanged a kiss at the finishing line.

‘They are really affectionate for a couple who have been married for a few years,’ said the onlooker. ‘They were always hugging and kissing each other.’
