A luxury cruise ship full of tourists headed to an island paradise has become stranded in the Port of Brisbane.

More than 1,500 people aboard the P&O Pacific Dawn were stuck in Brisbane on Saturday due to ‘windy conditions’.

The ship was scheduled to leave for the pacific islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia at 2pm but was still in port at 6.45pm, according to The Courier Mail.

Guest Susanna Molina, who is on holiday with her parents and niece and nephew, told the publication on Saturday afternoon they had been waiting on board at the port for more than four hours.

She said from the ship she did not feel the wind was particularly strong.

‘It was a bit windy between 2-4pm but I couldn’t tell if it was good enough to go,’ she said.

P&O confirmed the ship was not able to leave the Port of Brisbane on Saturday afternoon due to windy conditions.

‘The safety of guests and crew is always the first priority,’ a P&O spokesman said in a statement. Strong winds in Brisbane have delayed Pacific Dawn’s departure from the Portside Cruise Terminal.

‘Wind gusts of up to 30 knots are above the threshold for safe navigation from the berth.’

The ship eventually pulled away from the port shortly after 7pm on Saturday night.
