- Holland’s Pies tweeted a clip of a man tucking into pie and chips with gravy
- The brand tweeted that ‘only true Notherners’ would appreciate the clip
- But Northerners were shocked by the watery gravy and tweeted their outrage
An advertising campaign tried to appeal to Northerners with a campaign about pie and gravy – and it hilariously backfired.
Holland’s Pies tweeted a video of one of their products being drenched in gravy, saying that ‘only true Northerners’ would appreciate it.
But Northerners of Twitter weren’t so keen on the advert, claiming that the gravy looked weak and undercooked.
One furious Twitter user even said the clip had ‘traumatised’ them, while another insisted it had to have been made by a southerner.
Holland’s Pies tweeted a video of a woman pouring gravy on her pie and chips, targetted at Northerners but it backfired when true Northerners said it looked horrible
On Tuesday Holland’s Pies shared a clip of a woman settling down to have a dinner of pie and chips.
In the clip she pours some very watery looking gravy over the food as she prepares to tuck in.
The clip was made to appeal to Northerners, who are stereotypically known for their love of chips soaked in gravy.
The brand tweeted: ‘Only true Northerners will appreciate a pie smothered in gravy.’
But Holland’s probably was anticipating the reaction that their advert would receive.
Dozens of angry Northerners slated the food in the clip, saying the pie looked undercooked and the gravy was watery.
One tweeted: ‘That is not gravy!!!!!! That is a cup of tea before the milk!!!!!! As someone from Wigan who takes pies very seriously I am truly traumatised.
‘Come on guys 2017 has been stressful enough don’t mess with the gravy.’
Northerners didn’t react to the advert well, with many saying the gravy looked too watery
‘I am truly distressed by this. It looks like the stuff that comes out after your water’s been turned off for a bit,’ another posted.
A third joked: ‘This is what happens when you get Southerners to do marketing for Northerners.’
‘I think your pie needs a blood transfusion,’ a fourth said.
MailOnline has contacted Holland’s Pies and is awaiting comment.
Others reacted very badly to the advert, with one Twitter user even joking she was ‘traumatised’
