Holyrood is evacuated after ‘suspect package’ is found

  • Firefighters and police currently on scene at parliamentary offices in Edinburgh
  • Offices of MSPs Liz Smith, Jamie Halcro-Johnston, Edward Mountain closed off
  • MSPs have gathered in lobby area of the parliament as investigations continue

Scotland’s parliamentary building has been evacuated after reports of the ‘discovery of three suspicious packages.

At least one of the packages, which were sent to the offices of three separate Conservative MSPs at Holyrood, contained a white powder.

Firefighters and police officers are currently on the scene in Edinburgh, while MSPs have gathered in a lobby area of the parliament.

The offices of Liz Smith, Jamie Halcro-Johnston, Edward Mountain are currently closed off while business continues as usual in the other parts of the building.

A Scottish Parliament spokesman said: ‘An incident has occurred requiring the evacuation of the MSP building at Holyrood.

‘The MSP block is currently closed. Parliament staff are working to assess the situation.

‘Police are in attendance at the scene. The Parliament’s incident management team has been activated.

‘This is part of a pre-arranged process put in place, ready to deal with such developing situations.’
