Home & Away actor is behind bars after being charged with punching and shoulder-charging a female police officer in Sydney

Former Home & Away Actor Joel McIlroy is behind bars, accused of punching and shoulder-charging a female police officer in Surry Hills yesterday.

The 46-year-old is due to face court on Wednesday after he was involved in the alleged assault of a police officer on Tuesday.

Another man was under arrest on Rutland Street for minor property-related offences about 11.15am on Tuesday, when McIlroy approached the group.

He was not involved in the incident and was directed to leave by police, before  McIlroy allegedly shoulder-charged a female senior constable.

Police attempted to arrest him before a scuffle broke out, causing the 46-year-old and two officers to fall to the ground.

A member of the public then became involved as McIlroy was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

The 29-year-old female officer sustained injuries to her face, neck and shoulder as she was allegedly punched repeatedly.

Paramedics treated the officer at the scene before she was taken to St Vincent’s hospital and is expected to be released later today.

McIlroy was charged with two counts of assaulting an officer while on duty, resisting an officer on duty and wilfully obstructing an officer while on duty.

He was refused bail and is set to appear at Central Local Court on Wednesday.
