A new low for The Bachelor: Seven’s Home and Away beats the sinking reality dating series in the ratings amid rumours the Channel 10 show is going to be axed

The sinking ship that is The Bachelor has hit an low – being beaten by Home and Away for the most watched entertainment program in the ratings.

On Thursday night, audiences were more interested in seeing the drama unfold on Summer Bay rather than the reality dating show.

The long-running soap, which airs three episodes on Thursday nights, drew in 602,000 viewers, TV Blackbox reported.

A new low for The Bachelor: The sinking reality dating series fell far behind in the ratings on Thursday night as Channel Seven soap Home and Away beat the Channel 10 program

Channel 10 failed to bring in the numbers as Jimmy Nicholson did the all important hometown visits with his top four ladies on The Bachelor.

It was watched by just 470,000 people across the five city metro – a stark contrast to the reality show’s heyday when over a million would tune in.

The once-dominant reality show has been plagued by rumours it will be axed as it continues to suffer record low ratings, with season nine averaging just 421,000 metro viewers a night.

Channel 10 deny claims The Bachelor was being axed as the show continues to record the lowest ratings in the franchise’s eight-year history.

A well-placed insider told Daily Mail Australia the program’s future hangs in the balance as viewers tune out in favour of other reality dating shows.

The series will ‘inevitably’ be cancelled, they said, if Brooke Blurton’s upcoming season of The Bachelorette doesn’t see a significant boost in ratings.

Bachelor franchise star Abbie Chatfield, 26, recently offered her thoughts on why this season has performed so badly in the ratings.

She insisted Jimmy wasn’t to blame for the failure, but rather the problem was casting two dozen women remotely via Zoom.

‘If I’m being honest – Channel 10 might kill me for this – but maybe it’s [because] the casting process was ruined by Covid,’ she told Hit Hobart’s Jimmy and Nath on Tuesday.

She also noted that the show was ‘slow to start’, which may have caused viewers to tune out after the first few episodes.
