Home cook Lulaboo Jenkins is ‘disgusted’ after trying out popular wooden spoon cleaning hack

Why you need to clean your wooden spoon now: Home cook is ‘disgusted’ after trying out popular hack – and she’s not alone

  • A home cook was ‘disgusted’ after boiling up her wooden spoons in boiling water
  • The reason why the trick works is because excess oils seep out of the wood

A home cook has been left ‘disgusted’ after trying out a viral wooden spoon cleaning hack that involves putting the utensils in boiling water to see what cooking oils seep out of the wood.

The American woman, Lulaboo Jenkins, shared a video on TikTok where she tried the hack with her own wooden spoons – and was ‘grossed out’ by the results.

‘Holy cr*p I should have done this sooner. Lord help me this was gross,’ Lulaboo captioned the clip.

‘I’ve never thought about taking my wooden spoons and actually kind of cleaning them,’ she said.

‘I’ve had some of these for years, and now I’m very scared. This is one of my oldest ones right here, and you can tell because of the black tips.’

Once the water was boiled, she took her utensils and put them inside the water, leaving them bubbling for several minutes:

‘Okay, all done. Let’s see what has happened,’ she said.

‘Oh my god, I can’t even see the bottom any more. This is so gross.’

The video has gone viral and has been viewed more than 49million times, prompting thousands more to try it for themselves at home.

‘I personally just never use wooden utensils as they are porous and absorb,’ one person said.

‘I’m definitely doing this. All the curries I make with wooden spoons I can only imagine,’ another added.

A third wrote: ‘This is the reason why I hate wooden anything’.

Previously, Melbourne mum Chantel Mila said you should be deep cleaning your wooden spoons regularly:

‘When was the last time you deep cleaned your wooden spoon?’ Chantel said.

According to Matt Preston, his method is to remove the accumulation of cooking oils over the years. It was amazing to see how much was hidden in there.

‘Hot water releases cooking oils trapped in the spoon. The hidden oil will float to the surface. The soaking helps deep clean inside the wood while usual washing only washes the outside.’

The celebrity food critic came up with the ‘wooden spoon test’ several years ago to help home cooks determine whether or not it’s time to bin their wooden spoon.

‘On the surface a perfect present but stick an old one in a cup of boiling water to see what fate awaits all wooden spoons. Give it a sniff. Phew, stinky! And you were going to stir your custard with that,’ Preston said in a piece for Delicious.

‘Ask for a $10 silicon spatula instead. They’re hygienic, heat-resistant and flexible, so they are great for getting into the corner of a pan or getting every last skerrick out of a bowl.’
