Homeless man dies and another is left fighting for his life after their tent ‘was set on fire’ next to a busy dual carriageway

A man has been killed and another is fighting for his life in hospital after a tent was reportedly set on fire on the side of the A406.
Police were called at around 11.45pm on Tuesday after reports of a huge blaze next to the southbound carriageway in Wanstead, east London.
Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters tackled the fire, which completely destroyed a tent and damaged a large area of wasteland.
The two victims, believed to be homeless and in their 40s, ran onto the middle of the dual carriageway after suffering burns before being rushed to hospital.

One of the men died from his wounds on Wednesday. A post-mortem examination is due to take place on June 22.
The second man remains in hospital in a critical condition.
Two men are in custody after being arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder
A police spokesperson said: ‘Enquiries are continuing as to the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspicious.
‘The identity of both victims remains unknown at this stage. Officers from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are now investigating.’
Detective Sergeant Ian Valentine, said: ‘We are working hard to establish the circumstances that led to this fatal fire and we believe the public can assist us with our investigation.
‘We know that after the fire started, two men came out onto the A406 in an attempt to seek assistance from passing drivers.
‘Anyone who believes they may have seen these two people on the verge or stopped to speak to them is urged to contact us.
‘In particular we are keen to hear from anyone who has any relevant dashcam footage.’
The man’s death is the sixth suspected homicide in as many days.

A 38-year-old man died after a triple stabbing in Barnet, north London, on Tuesday night.
On Monday, 30-year-old Giedrius Juskauskas was stabbed to death in Stratford, east London, in the middle of the night.
Their deaths followed three murders in the space of a blood-soaked 24 hours.
Cheyon Evans, 18, was found with stabbed in Wandsworth, south-west London, shortly before 5pm on Friday evening and died in the street.
At the same time, 19-year-old Eniola Aluko was shot dead in Plumstead, south-east London, in a separate attack.
On Saturday, Gleb Stanislavovitch Zhebrovsky was stabbed to death in Limehouse, east London, just before 2pm.
