Homeowner perfectly preserves his 1940s retro themed abode

While some homeowners choose to renovate to ensure their home is contemporary and on trend for sale, others like to think outside of the box and get a little creative.

This was the case for one Adelaide-based man who restored his home to reflect a 1940s retro style theme 40 years ago and has perfectly preserved it that way ever since.

Complete with old school fixtures, abstract wallpaper and a bold jewel-toned colour palette, the double brick home takes those who visit on a trip back to a simpler, quirkier time of interior design.

The home, which is located northwest of Adelaide at 85 Wills Street in Largs Bay, was put on the market recently but due to its popularity, has already gone under offer – two days before its scheduled auction.

‘It’s had a lot of really good interest and a lot of people commented how the house is like a time capsule or time warp,’ Listing agent Kate Smith told realestate.com.au.

‘Even though the structure and layout of the property indicate it could have been built in the early twenties, the home itself was converted to a forties style home much later.

‘So it’s definitely a really unique home as it was intentionally renovated and preserved by the owner in a 40s-style theme.’

Features of the brick home include a bar, sunroom, boldly coloured kitchen, retro stove, separate dining area and three bedrooms – one of which is described as a ‘parent retreat’.

The home also features timber panelling, eye-popping wallpaper, carpet and lino and quirky tiling.

Wall to wall carpet, abstract artwork, small rugs and linoleum flooring are also recurring themes throughout.

The ad for the property describes the home as ‘perfect for young growing families’ and ‘a renovator’s delight’.

Despite this, the new owners are likely to preserve the home and only make minor renovations.

While it’s not known how much the house sold for, according to Domain it is estimated to be worth between $470,000 and $615,000.
