‘Horrendous carnage’ in Melbourne as major road into the city is closed just before peak hour after a horror crash between a truck and several cars

  • Three lanes of the Princes Freeway are closed at Laverton after horror smash

Commuters travelling home in Melbourne will suffer huge traffic delays on Friday afternoon after major incidents on three of the city’s busiest roads.

At least three lanes of the Princes Freeway are closed at Laverton in the city’s south-west after a horror crash between a truck and several cars at around 3pm.

The truck driver has rushed to hospital in a critical condition with head injuries while a man and a woman are also being treated at the scene,7 News reported.

‘Three right lanes are closed inbound near the High Street entry ramp, due to a truck collision. One lane remains open for traffic. Emergency services are also blocking one outbound lane to clean up debris,’ the VicRoads website states.

VicRoads spokesman Chris Miller told 3AW Drive ‘the level of carnage is really quite horrendous’.

‘It’s one of the worst I’ve seen,’ he said.

Drivers are urged to find an alternative route.

The crash follows earlier incidents on the West Gate Bridge and Tullamarine Freeway.

A day of traffic chaos on Melbourne roads began in the morning peak hour when a sedan crashed into the side of a truck on the West Gate Bridge at 8.20am.

‘The truck has then swerved into another lane and collided with a second truck, causing it to hit the bridge barrier and cause extensive damage,’ a Victoria Police statement said.

The sedan had left the scene by the time police arrived at the scene.

There were no injuries reported in the collisions.

It caused major delays for several hours, with traffic at one stage as far back as Burke Road on the Monash Freeway.

Police warned motorists there will be delays on the West Gate Bridge throughout the day while repair work is carried out, which may continue over the weekend.

Two out-bound lanes are also blocked on the Tullamarine Freeway after a truck lost its load near Pascoe Vale Road on Friday afternoon.

The lanes will remain closed until the truck and trailer can be removed, a VicRoads alert said.
