Horrified woman is plagued by infestation of fruit flies in her home – here is how to get rid of them

A woman living in upstate New York has been left horrified by the number of fruit flies living in her home – and it seems like others are having the same problem this year, too.

Sarah Molnar, a personal trainer who makes videos under the username @happyhealthysarahh, took to TikTok earlier this month to share her horrifying problem.

‘Can we openly talk about this and not seem like, “Oh my gosh, what kind of house are you living in?”‘ Molnar prefaced the video clip.

She then dramatically removed a plug-in LED fly trap from her wall, which was covered in a swarm of small, dead fruit flies.

‘How?’ the content creator wondered.

‘I wash my bananas, I heard they live in your garbage disposal,’ she continued.

She admitted that the plug-in fly trap worked wonders, but was dismayed over the amount that have been living in her house.

‘This thing is phenomenal, but those have been flying all over my house,’ she explained, as she showed a close-up of the trap.

Fruit flies are not only attracted to fruit and vegetables, but can also breed in drains, garbage disposals, trash containers, and even cleaning rags, according to The University of Kentucky Department of Entomology.

The insects are also attracted to fermenting food and drink, which can include beer.

They typically come out during the late summer and early fall, but can be especially pesky because they lay such a large amount of eggs – 500 at any given opportunity, to be exact.

In addition to the plug-in LED light, you can also get rid of them by trapping them in a number of solutions, like apple cider vinegar, vinegar and dish soap, or even old wine, per Good Housekeeping.

However, Molnar might be happy to know that she’s in good company this year, as  hundreds of people commented on her TikTok video complaining of the same problem.

‘YES!! they’ve been terrible this year!!!’ one person wrote.

Another agreed, ‘Yes! They are bad this year! One literally flew in my nose the other day?!’

‘They have been crazy this year!! I never have them & suddenly I do now!’ another typed.

Others even offered their own suggestions to kill off the irksome bugs.

‘Drain flies. You need to treat your drains nightly before bed and then cover with plastic,’ a TikTok user penned.

Someone else offered, ‘Mine are the same. I scrub my sink with dawn, pour baking soda down the drain and let that sit for 20 minutes. the pour boiling water down the drain. I do this ever few days. works pretty good.’

‘Boiling water down the drains to kill the eggs in the pipes,’ one person typed.
