The parents of DC shooting victim Sarah Milgrim were getting ready for bed on Wednesday night when they saw reports of the shooting at an event for the American Jewish Committee.

Her mother Nancy said she knew her daughter was a fellow at the organization, and immediately called authorities to find out if her daughter was a victim.

After both couldn’t offer any information, she said she opened a family locator app and saw her daughter’s location at the Capital Jewish Museum, where the shooting had unfolded.

‘I pretty much already knew,’ she told the New York Times. ‘I was hoping to be wrong.’

Nancy Milgrim said her phone then rang, and when she picked up it was Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, on the other line.

Sarah’s father Robert added that Leiter pointed to rising anti-Semitism in the US following the October 7 attacks on Israel.

‘What went through my mind is, I feel the antisemitism that has surfaced since Oct. 7 and also since the election of President Trump,’ Robert said. ‘It’s just an extension of my worst fears.’

The two victims were soon to be engaged. They had been attending a Young Diplomats event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum Wednesday night.

At the end of the event, Lischinsky and Milgrim were stood outside with a group of people when a gunman approached and opened fire.

‘Two beautiful young people were gunned down last night needlessly. No parents should have to be called and told that their children were violently murdered leaving a religious event at the Jewish Museum,’ said Attorney General Pam Bondi.

‘That should never happen in this world and not in our country. And this person will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.’

Lischinsky, 30, had bought an engagement ring and was just days away from proposing to Milgrim, 26, on a planned trip to Jerusalem, according to Leiter.

‘The ironic part is that we were worried for our daughter’s safety in Israel,’ Robert said. ‘But she was murdered three days before going.’

In 2017, Milgrim’s Kansas high school had been graffitied with swastikas and she felt endangered as a Jewish teen.

‘I worry about going to my synagogue, and now I have to worry about safety at my school. And that shouldn’t be a thing,’ she told KSHB at the time.

She graduated from the University of Kansas in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies with a minor in anthropology and also had a master’s in international affairs from American University.

Her Instagram bio also had a yellow ribbon, as well as a passage from Deuteronomy, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ written in Hebrew.

Staff who worked alongside Lischinsky and Milgrim said the couple were known for their love for each other around the embassy.

‘It was the cutest love story,’ an official said, adding that they met each other around a year and a half ago when they started working together.

In an alleged manifesto posted online before the slayings, Rodriguez said: ‘Public opinion has shifted against the genocidal apartheid state, and the American government has simply shrugged, they’ll do without public opinion then, criminalize it where they can, suffocate it with bland reassurances that they’re doing all they can to restrain Israel where it cannot criminalize protest outright.’
