Horror as baby dies after alleged assault in Hobart, Australia

A 10-month-old baby boy who was rushed to hospital with critical injuries following an alleged assault has died. 

Daniel John Ridgers, 25, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the child by allegedly shaking him and dropping him into a cot on November 30. 

Ridgers did not enter a plea or apply for bail during the out-of-hours hearing in Hobart’s Magistrate Court and was remanded in custody. 

Tasmania Police on Monday issued a statement saying the little boy had died.

‘Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of the baby,’ a statement said.

‘The police investigation is ongoing.’

On Saturday, detectives revealed they believe the infant was injured in a ‘serious assault’ but warned the investigation is expected to take ‘some time’.

‘Police were called to the Royal Hobart Hospital around 5:20am … after a child presented with critical injuries that are believed to be suspicious,’ police said. 

Ridgers scheduled to next appear in court on Monday, December 4.
