Paramedics were called to the Rodeo, about 200km east of Port Augusta, at around 11:45pm.

A SA Ambulance spokeswoman told The Advertiser a 25-year-old man was treated for a puncture wound to his neck. The bull was not injured during the incident.

It follows a heated exchange between the state’s animal welfare agency and the rodeo organisers.

As temperatures reached highs of 42C on Saturday the RSPCA called for the event to be cancelled.

There is currently no legally enforceable temperature cap to could prevent animals from participating in rodeos.

Animal welfare advocate Rebekah Eyers said: ‘In the forecast conditions, it’s likely some animals would suffer heat stress but it will be difficult to verify how many have suffered or to what extent.’

Despite the concerns, the 67th annual rodeo went ahead.

The economy of the town, which is facing a major drought, is massively boosted by the event which brings in up to 3,000 visitors each year.
