Horror as female police officer is allegedly attacked with a sword while responding to a ‘domestic disturbance’ at a home in Port Augusta

A female police officer is being airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a man allegedly attacked her with a sword.

Police were called to a home in High Street, in Port Augusta, South Australia around 10.40am on Saturday following reports of a domestic disturbance.

As soon as the two officers arrived at the property a 30-year-old man allegedly struck the female officer in her left arm.

Police said she suffered a serious injury and they used capsicum spray to subdue the man.

Paramedics attended to the female officer at the scene but she needed further treatment.

An SA Ambulance spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia the officer was being airlifted to hospital in a Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFSD) helicopter on Saturday evening.

She will be taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital as soon as she arrives in Adelaide.

The condition of the officer has been described as non-life threatening.

Following the alleged incident, police arrested a 30-year-old man and he will face several charges including assaulting a prescribed emergency worker.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the alleged attack was shocking.

‘Policing is an inherently dangerous occupation because of the nature of some incidents officers are called to,’ Commissioner Stevens told the Advertiser.

‘An incident of this nature highlights the risk police face on a daily basis serving the community.

‘Thankfully the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening and measures are being taken to fully support her and her family.’

Shadow Minister for Police Jack Batty condemned the alleged attack and described the incident as ‘senseless’ and ‘violent’.

‘Enough is enough. We need a zero tolerance approach to cowards who attack cops,’ Mr Batty said.

Anyone found guilty of assaulting a prescribed emergency services worker in South Australia faces a maximum jail term of 15 year behind bars.

Last month, another officer was allegedly stabbed in the back and chest by a man during a wild Sydney pursuit which only ended after a car crashed into a pole.

The constable was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

Musa Musa, 20, has since been charged with wounding a police officer, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and several assault and knife-related charges.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted SA Health for further comment.
