Horror as man allegedly steals a car with child asleep in the back near Newcastle in NSW

A man who allegedly stole a car with a baby asleep in the back seat before abandoning the vehicle has spent the night behind bars charged with a string with offences.

NSW Police launched an urgent manhunt after a man allegedly got into the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked on Groves Rd in Bennetts Green in the Lake Macquarie region around 2.30pm on Sunday.

A one-year-old child was sleeping in the back seat at the time of the alleged theft. 

The alleged carjacker headed towards Pacific Highway but stopped in a nearby car park where he dumped the vehicle with the baby still inside and fled the scene.

The child was unharmed during the incident and reunited with their relieved parents a short time later.  

Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a man, 27, at a home in nearby Windale on Monday afternoon.

He was charged with offences including unlawfully taking or driving a motor vehicle with a person in it, taking and driving a conveyance without the owner’s consent, and driving as a learner without proper accompaniment.

The man was refused bail to appear in Belmont Local Court on Tuesday.
