Horror as man falls down a drain while trying to retrieve his phone

A man has become trapped underground for 36 hours after he fell down a storm drain while trying to retrieve his phone.

A resident heard the man screaming for help from inside the storm water network near Kangaroo Point in Brisbane’s CBD at about 11am on Monday.

Fire crews at the scene were able to cut the drain and pull the man to safety.

The man told emergency services he drunk the rainwater to survive and spent most of his time in the drain crawling around on his hands and knees.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital in the city’s south where he was treated for hypothermia and some cuts and abrasions.

A Kangaroo Point resident heard the man screaming for help from inside the storm water network in Brisbane ‘s CBD on Monday night

The man told his rescuers he had spent some most of the 36-hour ordeal partially submerged in rainwater before finally finding an opening.

Here he screamed for help, attracting the attention of a local resident, with witnesses saying they also heard heavy breathing coming from the drain.

An employee who worked in a building near the drain said the man had been spotted in the drain the previous day, but had said he was fine.

‘A resident asked are you okay and he was like yeah,’ he told the Courier Mail.

However, when the man was spotted in the drain the following day the resident phoned emergency services.

‘Apparently he was running around everywhere down there,’ the employee said.

‘I’m not sure if he was lying down or if he could stand but there’s a dead end he would have met.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Queensland Police in relation to the incident.
