Hospital worker is sacked and another disciplined for accessing Ed Sheeran’s medical records

A hospital worker has been sacked and another disciplined after they accessed Ed Sheeran’s medical records for no legitimate reason.

Ipswich Hospital said a member of admin staff had been fired while a medical staff worker had been given a written warning.

Ed Sheeran was at the Suffolk hospital being treated for two broken arms following a bike accident.

He broke his right wrist and left elbow causing him to pull out of live shows in his Asian tour.

Both cases of disciplinary action happened after October 16, when the singer was admitted to hospital.

The hospital launched a review of how it deals with celebrities after the star, from Framlingham, Suffolk, was asked to pose for selfies with staff.

It covered ‘confidentiality, privacy of the patient and their loved ones and practical considerations’.

The songwriter, from Suffolk, took to Instagram on October 16 to tell fans about the accident.

At the time he wrote: ‘A visit to my doctors confirmed fractures in my right wrist and left elbow that will leave me unable to perform live concerts for the immediate future.

‘Sadly, this means that the following shows will not be able to go ahead as planned: Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

‘I’m waiting to see how the healing progresses before we have to decide on shows beyond that. ‘Please stay tuned for more details. PS – Ed isn’t typing this as he has both arms casted/bandaged.’

Ipswich Hospital did not provide further information regarding the data breach incident.

But it said in a Freedom of Information response to the BBC that the two members of staff ‘accessed patient information without legitimate or clinical reason’.

Neither were referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council or to any other professional bodies, it added.
