- A digital TV box on standby wastes £25.91 in electricity each year
- A multi-room speaker system always left on idyl wasts a furter £19.66
- However, a new television set drains barely any power on standby – £1.23 a year
Leaving devices on standby rather than turning them off is costing Britons £1.6 billion – or £86 per household – a year in electricity.
A new report found that a digital TV box costs households nearly £25.91 a year, even when the TV itself is switched off.
A multi-room speaker system in idle mode costs a further £19.66 a year. And a wireless router which is always left on – a staple for most homes – costs another £5.64.
A modern television set barely drains any power and costs just £1.23 a year in standby mode
In contrast, a modern TV barely drains power and costs just £1.23.
A spokesman for MoneySuperMarket, which conducted the research, said: ‘By being a bit more nimble with usage around the home, households can save money on their bills.’
