How AFL fans can save a fortune on watching every match on pay TV with a simple hack – but there is a catch

  • Kayo subscribers face a price hike for this footy season
  • There is a way to not only avoid it, but to pay much less
  • There are terms and conditions for the footy hack, though

A keen social media user has worked out how AFL fans can save hundreds of dollars on watching every game of the 2024 season on streaming platform Kayo.

A Twitter account called ‘Pig Mentality’ has revealed that fans can save big money by subscribing to digital memberships with their respective clubs.

‘Currently #Kayo costs $360 per year, increasing to $420 per year at the end of February,’ the account posted.

‘Most #AFL clubs offer a digital membership, which includes 12 months of Kayo and some bonuses, for much cheaper.’

GWS Giants fans stand to save the most, with the cheapest digital membership package of all teams at just $231 for the season.

Most teams’ digital membership sits at around $250-$260 while Carlton and Hawthorn fans have to pay the most at $280.

At present, the Sydney Swans are the only side that are not offering a digital membership on their website, but that could change before the season kicks off.

Subscribers are not limited to just AFL matches, either. The voucher allows them to watch all sports offered on the Kayo Basic platform, including HD streams.

Plus the digital memberships include a range of other perks, including club merchandise discounts, scarves, pins, lanyards, bumper stickers and more.

But there is a significant catch: you can only use the digital membership once.

‘After 12 month Kayo offer ends, subscription will automatically renew at standard Kayo pricing (currently $35/mth on Kayo Basic), unless the subscription is changed or cancelled prior,’ the terms and conditions on the North Melbourne Kangaroos website read.

Whether the option is available or offered at the same price for the 2025 season remains undetermined.

You will also need to have an existing Kayo account. You can create a new one, but if you have let an existing account cancel out, it will need to be reinstated.

‘If you’ve recently cancelled your Kayo subscription, you’ll need to reverse your cancellation before being able to successfully apply a voucher to your account,’ the Kayo website reads.

You also cannot use the digital membership subscription on Kayo One, the lower-tier subscription package that limits the amount of devices you can stream on.

Regardless, fans were grateful for the hack, with several saying they were going to take advantage of it.

‘Useful post, thanks. I didn’t even realise a price rise was coming,’ one posted.
