How Australian porn consumption SURGED during lockdown – and what genre residents of each city were searching for

  • Brisbane has dramatically increased its porn usage during the lockdown
  • Figures show Australia porn searches spiked by 5.2 per cent in mid-march
  • The most popular porn categories were lesbian, Japanese and bondage
  • Data showed capital cities consumed more porn than those in country areas

After spending almost three months in lockdown and casual sex with strangers either outlawed or significantly discouraged Australian porn use has surged.

In April, Dr Paul J. Maginn surveyed hundreds of people on Twitter and found 60 per cent had increased their porn usage during the pandemic.

The numbers were backed up by similar reports from popular porn website Pornhub who reported a 5.2 per cent increase in mid-March as Australia entered lockdown.

Dr Maginn said the biggest increase came from Brisbane followed by Perth and while Adelaide was in third place, it was much closer to the national average.

Dr Maginn pointed towards research in the U.S. that showed people were having less sex due to lockdown restrictions which would explain an increase in viewing porn.

Australia’s favourite category ‘Lesbian’ remained popular during lockdown ranking number one in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.

Darwin’s top category was ‘Bondage’ while Hobart’s number one search was ‘Anal’.

The ‘Japanese’ porn category surged during the pandemic to rank at number two in all the capital cities and was ranked number one in Melbourne.

Dr Maginn noted while 80 per cent of Australian porn traffic was from NSW, Victoria and Queensland in line with the population size, those in capital cities were far more likely consume porn than those based in the country.

Sydney watched 29.2 per cent of the total porn consumed despite its 5.23 million only taking up 20.9 per cent of Australia’s population.

Similarly, Brisbane took up 16.3 per cent of all porn consumption despite a population size of 9.9 per cent of the country.

Dr Maginn suggested this was largely due to the availability of reliable internet in city areas along with other social differences between the two.
