How Erin May Henry found success as an entrepreneur

While some follow a traditional career path for the stability of a fixed salary and working hours, Erin Henry, 27, knew this wasn’t for her.

The Melbourne-based entrepreneur, who had planned to work in the events industry, knew that world wasn’t for her while studying and in 2014, started forming the basis of her business empire.

Now, just 10 months after launching her online strategy and coaching business, The May Collective, Ms Henry has already made close to $100,000 and has plans to build her brand even further in 2018.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Ms Henry said that when it comes down to it, all you need is ‘Wi-Fi and a dream’ to make your entrepreneurship goals a reality.

‘After school I took some time off and worked part time before starting a degree in Business majoring in Public Relations because I was interested in events,’ she said, adding that she worked at Diva and a call centre during the degree.

‘But shortly after starting it I knew that a career in events wasn’t for me but that the business side most certainly was.’

While studying Business and Innovation at university, Ms Henry knew immediately that she wanted to start her own business and decided to start a YouTube channel after hearing about the power of an online brand and presence during class.

‘I went home and started one right away. I was doing the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide at the time so it was really fitness focused and I was just talking about health and fitness topics,’ Ms Henry said.

‘The first video I made wasn’t very good, I was just filming on my laptop while sitting on my now fiancee’s bench press but it got me started.

‘So I got my channel going, that was in 2014 and in May, 2016, I graduated university.’

Once she graduated, Ms Henry watched her peers take on full time jobs but she had no interest in following in their footsteps.

‘I couldn’t work for someone else, I knew within me I couldn’t as it wasn’t how I was built,’ Ms Henry said.

'I didn't conform at school, I wasn't good with authority, so I knew I had to start my own business and be my own boss,' she said

Ms Henry, who had already learned a lot about social media strategy through her own experience, registered her business as a digital marketing agency and started doing freelance social media work while growing her YouTube channel.

But after experiencing fear and self doubt about her future, she started delving into self development.

‘I got scared, I became doubtful of myself, and I held back big time. Even though I had secured work and my business was successful,’ she said.

Erin’s top tips for success in business

* Have  a personal brand and build it around yourself and your passions

* Be 1,000 per cent authentic and don’t try and put on a facade or copy someone else or you will burn out

* It takes time, be patient and build a loyal following rather than expecting the whole ‘seven figures in seven days’ concept some people believe in

* Build clients and work hard – I put two videos out every week, do Facebook and Instagram live videos and send out newsletters

* Be proactive in the beginning and you will have a reputable spot in the market

‘I didn’t build a website. I didn’t actively seek new clients. I felt like an imposter, who would even hire me, I don’t know anything that others don’t already know.’

Once she made this choice, Ms Henry saw her business skyrocket.

‘I dove straight into this idea and from me having this idea to making it happen was about two weeks,’ Ms Henry said.

‘I hired a business coach myself, did a development program and in February 2017 I launched The May Collective and moved from a fitness angle to talking about self development and business strategy.

‘Once I stepped into this world and started talking about these topics I was so passionate about my YouTube channel exploded and my business took off.

‘The second I committed myself the momentum began immediately. Because of the change in my YouTube content, I started to receive messages from females asking if I could mentor them.’

Content uploaded by Ms Henry included tips on business, managing money, the law of attraction, changing mindset and public speaking tips.

She also started offering courses to help people grow their own ‘digital empire’, reset their mindsets and learn how to use YouTube.

The concept of her brand was simple – ’empowering women to grow their loyal and engaged audience using digital strategies to elevate their business to the level of success that they dream of’.

‘My income now comes in from one on one coaching, group coaching, my E book and ad revenue and sponsorships on YouTube,’ Ms Henry said.

‘The moment it truly started to feel real was when I got my first $5,000 payment from a client. It was amazing that somebody was paying me to teach them what I know about the digital world and business.’

Ms Henry has almost reached her goal of reaching six figures in the first year and has plans to start doing larger group coaching sessions and public speaking in 2018.

‘The best thing about being my own boss is that I have uncapped earning potential and that I have this amazing community behind me,’ Ms Henry said.

‘I love helping people find their niche and teaching them how to make money and because I am so passionate about it, my tribe grows.

‘So now, here I am. I have a successful coaching business on my own terms; I spend every day communicating with inspiring females helping them to achieve their ultimate life and business dreams.’

When it comes down to it, Ms Henry said the key to her success was being authentic and believing in herself.

‘If I could pinpoint the most important moment that had lead to my success, it would be the day I invested in myself,’ she said.

‘I left my fear behind, got help from a coach, worked through everything that previously held me back and started riding the waves to success.

‘If you want to work on a beach in Hawaii on your laptop then you can, you just need to take the right steps to get there.’
