How Julia Fox has ‘reinvented’ the Canadian tuxedo

Julia Fox has become synonymous with the Canadian tuxedo after ‘reinventing’ the double-denim look with her risque DIY ensembles.

Earlier this week the model and actress, 33, sported a characteristically daring design at a New York Fashion Week dinner.

She stepped out in an asymmetrical, backless mini dress made from recycled jean waistbands – and finished the look with a denim puffer, boots and purse.

But it is not the first time she has flaunted her denim wardrobe, and her constant remodelling of the humble jean seems to be spearheading a wider resurgence.

Here, New York stylist Liz Teich tells FEMAIL how Fox’s signature style is ‘one of the hottest trends for 2023’ and how the everyday wearer can recreate it.

In the early 2000s, the Canadian tuxedo – defined as the wearing of double denim – was everywhere with a whole host of A-list celebs making the bold fashion move.

Most famously, at the American Music Awards in 2001, Britney Spears arrived in a Kurt and Bart denim patchwork gown alongside Justin Timberlake, who had opted for a light-wash ensemble topped with a denim cowboy hat.

But the popularity of the distinctive look was short-lived and soon dropped off.

Liz Teich, who runs The New York Stylist and regularly shares fashion inspiration to her 110,000 Instagram followers, has been a professional commercial stylist for 15 years.

The fashion guru, who has styled the likes of Tom Brady, Ashley Graham and Mike Tyson, told FEMAIL why the Canadian tuxedo disappeared.

She said: ‘I think society started rejecting the denim overload look after seeing how it was done in such a cheesy way, especially as we saw in the famous Britney/Justin moment and replicated in costumes and parodies.

‘After the last few years in sweats and athleisure, everyone seems to be excited about denim again, so it’s only natural that designers are revisiting it in a more high fashion way again.’

And Fox seems to be at the forefront of this wave – making it her personal crusade to bring the look back into fashion.

And, in another high-profile appearance, Fox attended the Kenzo show at Paris Fashion Week alongside her now ex Kanye West.

The actress sported a denim co-ord that boasted coned bust detailing, and with her former beau also wearing a matching all-denim ensemble, many said it was reminiscent of the Spears and Timberlake moment.

But far from keeping her DIY denim tricks to herself, Fox has previously shared tutorials to her Instagram page on how to recreate some of her more achievable looks.

The star uploaded a video to Instagram, which has been viewed more than one million times, on how to create a pair of low-waisted denim pants and re-use the waistband as a bandeau.

Poll

Would you dare to wear a Canadian tuxedo?

She explained: ‘It makes for a really cute set and it’s easy and honestly now that latex is kinda played out, denim, you’re all I have left.

‘ALSO for the zipper you have to put crazy glue at the top to keep it from sliding off!!!’

Speaking about the star’s denim ensembles, Liz told FEMAIL: ‘I have to give her credit for demonstrating how creative you can be to look at an old garment and reinvent it in new ways, which is something I personally love to teach my clients instead of buying a whole new wardrobe.

‘While it’s not really wearable by most, the fact that she made an entire outfit out of a pair of jeans is pretty impressive and a sustainable way to update a basic look.

‘Of course, for the average person, this is great inspiration to make denim your own!’

She continued: ‘Between more conscious advances in denim production, Fox’s daring denim ensembles, and designers pushing for denim in new ways, this classic redux is really one of the hottest trends for 2023.’

That being said, many everyday wearers wanting to brave the Canadian tuxedo may not know where to start.

But Liz said that the answer might be easier than you think.

The stylist revealed: ‘I’ve been showing my clients to take the old basic chambray top sitting in their closet and pair it with your favorite jeans for a surprisingly refreshing look.

‘You can layer with a turtleneck under it for this season to give it depth and a bit of intentional polish.

‘I’ve also been loving a matching denim jacket and jean moment.

‘The trick is to either keep your denim pieces nearly or exactly alike in wash or contrasting, but you too can get creative with it!’
