How Matt Shirvington broke protocol on Sunrise just weeks after his first day as the new host

New Sunrise host Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington broke protocol on Wednesday morning when he deviated from typical breakfast TV show attire.

Shirvington, 44, eschewed his usual navy suit for a grey bomber jacket which stuck out like a sore thumb over his business ensemble.

But Shirvington was confident with his new look, posing and preening in a behind-the-scenes video posted to Instagram.

Before getting ready to deliver his next segment, the TV star and floor manager Mitchell Healey were seen fussing over his new trendy jacket.

Once they were sure it sat just right, the former Olympic sprinter was seen strutting his stuff on set.

It seems the television host had some leeway with what he was allowed to wear on set after he had a huge ratings win during his first day on the Sunrise couch.

Continuing its reign as Australia’s number one breakfast program, Sunrise drew in an impressive 235,000 metro viewers, beating Nine’s Today show by 32% market share.

Meanwhile, Today earned 188,000 metro viewers while ABC News Breakfast drew just 104,000.

Shirvington and co-host Natalie Barr celebrated recently celebrated their big ratings win, after rival Today show was forced to operate without its leading man Karl Stefanovic, who was away from the desk on a two-week holiday.

Karl, 48, was previously slated to go head-to-head with David Koch’s replacement, but was MC’ing at chicken heiress Tamie Ingham’s wedding to Guillaume Brahimi in Paris instead.

Instead, the program was fronted by Karl’s co-host Sarrah Abo and fill-in, Nine’s chief political editor Charles Croucher.

‘The timing is absolutely horrible. It’s never been more important for Karl and Sarah to put on a united front,’ a source told New Idea.

‘It’s crucial Karl be there to prove what Today is made of while Shirvo and Nat try to step up without Kochie [David Koch].’

However Nine Network’s director of morning television Steven Burling defended Karl’s break and said it was ‘pure coincidence’.

‘[Karl] booked in these two weeks’ leave some months ago. The fact his holiday coincides with Shirvo’s first day is pure coincidence. Nothing more,’ he said.
