Parents typically wait less than three years to take over their children’s bedrooms after they move out, a new survey has found.

Empty-nesters turn the space into personal gyms, offices or craft rooms after an average of two years and seven months.

Research involving 2,000 adults also found the average homeowner aged over 50 is sitting on the equivalent of £56,574 worth of unused space in their house, based on average property prices.

Mark Gregory, of Equity Release Supermarket, said the possible windfall was going to waste as ‘fond memories and nostalgia’ linked to homes made owners reluctant to trade down to a smaller property.
