Celebrities will often try anything to look good and stay in shape.

And as well as a whole host of beauty treatments and tweakments, many turn to their diet in the search of body perfection.

Veganism, keto diets, the Atkins diet as well as fasting and fruitarian regimes are some that mega stars have sworn by to help them lose weight and keep it off.

But this week one big name in the wellness industry – Gwyneth Paltrow – revealed she had finally ditched her ultra-strict Paleo diet after years of being ‘obsessed with eating healthily’.

The actress turned wellness guru, 52, who founded her wellness company GOOP in 2008, admitted she’s ‘sick’ of the caveman diet that restricts bread, cheese and pasta.

And she isn’t the only star who has changed their minds on their diet plans – with a host of stars ditching their strict vegan diets over the years including Lizzo, Anne Hathaway and Jenna Ortega.

Other stars like Kourtney Kardashian have ditched their keto diet, while Kelly Brook turned her back on her Atkins journey and Ashton Kutcher ended up hospitalised after following a fruitarian diet for a film role.

Fruitarian diet – Ashton Kutcher

In 2013 Ashton was hospitalized after trying a fruitarian diet in preparation for his role as Steve Jobs in the biopic Jobs.

The actor said at the time that he was rushed to hospital before shooting his new movie Jobs about the late entrepreneur after embarking on a fruit-only diet for the biopic, favoured by the Apple co-founder who died of pancreatic cancer in 2011.

He told USA Today newspaper at the premiere of the movie at the Sundance Film Festival: ‘First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to like severe issues.

‘I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was doubled over in pain.

‘My pancreas levels were like completely out of whack. It was really terrifying… considering everything.’

He studied hundreds of hours of footage of Steve for the role and claimed he discovered they had a lot in common.

A fruitarian diet is a vegan diet primarily focused on consuming raw fruits, with some variations including nuts, seeds, and some vegetables.

It’s considered a restrictive eating pattern and may pose nutritional risks if not carefully planned.

Veganism – Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway spoke in 2019 about inadvertently upending her vegan diet.

The star chatted about her decision to give up alcohol and give in to meat eating as she graced a Tatler cover.

The star, now 42, went vegan in 2012 to play Catwoman in Dark Night Rises and kept it up for her Oscar winning role as Fantine in Les Misérables.

It wasn’t until she was at dinner with Matt Damon at a swanky restaurant in Iceland while filming Interstellar in 2014 that she gave up her diet and never felt better.

The brunette beauty said that she was out with a group of people including her husband at a Michelin starred eatery when Damon told the chef he would eat whatever was prepared.

Anne said she awkwardly gave in to the temptation of non-vegan food.

‘So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow,’ she revealed.

Adding: ‘So I asked [she puts on a small embarrassed voice]: ‘Is your fish local?’ And they said: ‘Do you see that fjord?’ So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.’

‘I just didn’t feel good or healthy,’ she previously told to Harper’s Bazaar.

Anne isn’t the only celebrity to abandon a strict plant-based lifestyle and joined celebs like Zooey Deschanel, Carrie Underwood and Natalie Portman who’ve all ditched the lifestyle.

Keto diet – Kourtney Kardashian

In March 2020 Kourtney finally ditched her keto diet.

According to Medical News Today, the keto diet refers to a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet.

The main goal of the food plan is to get more calories from protein and fat than from carbs.

It works by depleting your body of its store of sugar, so it will start to break down protein and fat for energy, causing ketosis.

Ketosis is a metabolic process that involves fat providing most of the fuel for the body, rather than energy coming from foods eaten.

Kourtney started it for the second time in June 2019 but has since given it up for good.

She admitted during her interview with Health magazine that she has quit the keto diet but said her household remains gluten and dairy-free.

Kourtney said: ‘I noticed that my body changed for the better when I quit the Keto.’

She now focuses on well-balanced meals and engaging in regular exercise to achieve a healthy, well-toned body.

Atkins diet – Kelly Brook

Model Kelly ditched the Atkins diet in 2016.

When asked in an interview if she was still following the regime after previously speaking about it she said: ‘Well, I’ve got two sugars in my tea and I’m eating a croissant, so no.

‘As soon as you come off it, you go back up. Not hugely. I’m always between an 8 and a 12.

‘But it was a really good challenge for me – I’d never been on any diet in my life, so the fact that I did it was amazing!’

The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, and high-fat eating plan designed for weight loss.

It involves restricting carbohydrate intake, particularly refined carbohydrates, while allowing unrestricted consumption of protein and fat.

The diet is divided into four phases, each with increasing net carbohydrate allowances as the individual progresses towards their weight loss goals.

Kelly said when she moved back to the UK from LA she changed her lifestyle and felt better for it.

She explained: ‘It was easy to do when I was in Los Angeles because you’re so health-conscious out there, but as soon I left, my focus changed.

‘It wasn’t so much on my diet and exercise regime – it was more on enjoying my life a little bit more. My boyfriend (now husband Jeremy Parisi) is Italian and lives in France, so I cook a lot of pasta and we have croissants most mornings.

‘I’m more accepting of myself. You’re skinnier and toned when you’re younger. When you’re older, you have a few too many glasses of wine and too much chocolate cake.’

She was announced British ambassador for the Atkins plan in January 2015.

She lost over 8lbs in weight through lowering her carbohydrate and sugar intake and upping her exercise regime.

Veganism – Lizzo

Lizzo revealed last October in a video that she has ditched veganism in favor of an omnivorous protein-rich diet.

The 36-year-old rapper and singer cleared up her new approach to eating for fans in a clip in which she displayed everything she eats in a given day now that she has added back animal proteins into her diet.

She gave the glimpse into a day in her life after flaunting her impressive weight loss and slimmed-down figure.

Lizzo may have also wanted to clear up what she has been eating after she previously blasted rumors that she has been taking Ozempic-like weight-loss drugs to help achieve her more svelte look.

She opened her video in a brown dress that accentuated her curves as she held a lettuce wrap that a contained some meat and tomatoes out toward the camera.

She added her own narration in which she explained her decision to give up her vegan diet in favor of an omnivorous diet.

‘My reintroduction to protein came from Japan,’ she shared, explaining that a trip to the Asian nation left her feeling fantastic after dining on fresh sushi and ‘fluffy’ eggs.

‘I was amazed at how good my body felt the next day,’ she admitted.

Since adding back animal proteins into her diet, Lizzo thought it was helping her to have ‘more energy, lose weight’ and to deal with ‘mental fog’ that she suffered from.

Despite leaving veganism behind, she said she still thought it was the healthiest option, and she said she aspired to one day be a ‘raw, alkaline vegan.’

However, there’s little scientific support for the purported health benefits of an alkaline diet — though it’s focus on avoiding processed foods can be beneficial — and many vegetables can be better digested after being cooked.

Lizzo concluded the video by declaring that she wouldn’t judge anyone else for their diet, whether they were raw vegans or carnivores.

Some of her fans in the comments didn’t appreciate her rejection of veganism, even if it was only a personal choice and not a total rejection of the philosophy.

One angry person took issue with calling herself a person ‘who added protein to her diet,’ calling the phrase ‘so incorrect honestly.’

‘You already have protein in your vegan diet, honey. You just added dead animals to your diet, that’s the correct word. Xoxo,’ they wrote.

‘Veganism is not a diet,’ wrote another person, apparently meaning that it was more than just a weight-loss strategy.

Others wondered how she could get past the ‘cruelty’ they felt was inherent in the production of animal-based foods.

Jenna Ortega – veganism

‘And I don’t think that I was meeting my nutrient requirements so I started eating fish again.

‘So I’m currently pescatarian.’

A vegan diet is based on plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits) and foods made from plants.

Vegans do not eat foods that come from animals, including dairy products and eggs.
