How the Premier League is COPYING the Spanish

Spanish football has always been a force on the global stage but La Liga teams have dominated the footballing landscape for the last decade. 

In that time the national team has won the world cup (2010), and the winner of the UEFA Champions League has originated from the Iberian nation. 

Spanish teams have also won the last five champions league finals Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016 – 2018.

The quality of the players, coaches and the global appeal of the league has now been combined with a variety of technology that use artificial intelligence to keep Spanish teams ahead of the competition. 

The sustained  success has inspired other leagues – including the English Premier League – to follow suit.

La Liga has led the way using a combination of artificial intelligence and precision camera work to create a constant flow of data. 

This is then taken and used by media companies, clubs and the league itself for a variety of purposes.  

The implementation of technology in football has so far been believed to be limited to just  VAR – Video Assistant Referee. 

It has been under immense scrutiny as the  top leagues and competitions around the world embrace the technology to ensure correct refereeing decision are made.

‘More than ever before, a football match is a unique experience thanks to recent technological advances which have improved the standing of Spanish clubs, the professionalism of its technical bodies, as well as the fan experience,’ says Joris Evers, LaLiga’s chief communications officer.

‘VAR has become the protagonist of each football match, enabling more even-handed referee decisions, adding prestige to our league, and more drama and new experiences for our fans, whilst making use of the most innovative tools.

‘At a time when there is much talk about artificial intelligence and machine learning, LaLiga is demonstrating its leadership as we start to use these technologies to optimise scheduling of our matches.’

360-degree replay 

La Liga was the first league around the world to implement 360-degree replays in order to give the fan a unique experience. 

It is powered by 38 4K cameras located around the stadium and complimented by a ‘spider-cam’ which is suspended above the field and operated manually. 

Intel powers the technology and uses it to create replays similar to the ones in the popular video game FIFA. 

It has previously only been used in the Spanish domestic league but is now the technology is set to come to the English Premier league for the 2019-2020 season. 

Mr Evers told MailOnline that six LaLiga stadiums already have this technology – FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, Athletic Club de Bilbao and Valencia CF.  

The league intends to add the technology to the stadiums of Real Sociedad and Betis for the coming season.

The technology is set to be brought to the English game next season in three stadiums.

‘The challenge for us today is to get as close to FIFA as possible. As we have to deliver this great video-game style views that people have come to expect,’ Mr Evers added.

‘Many people are discovering football now not from watching it or plying it themselves but through video games. 

‘If you have a broadcast that looks like the traditional broadcast with just a couple of fixed views in a stadium people are going to think it is not as spectacular as the ‘real-thing’ on their video game.’ 

Calendar Selector/Sunlight Broadcasting Planning 

Its latest development makes use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to maximise fan enjoyment and profits through optimising its televised schedule.

La Liga, unlike its UK equivalent, has almost complete control over its scheduling – except for a game a week. 

This allows it to pick and choose which games will be televised and when they will be aired in order to maximise profits. 

This includes time windows for almost all week days and several kick-off variants for weekends.   

A tool, dubbed Calendar selector, allows a programmer to establish any exceptions – such as accounting for European cup and domestic cup games, protests and travel issues and then automatically generates a schedule. 

This system is designed to work in a few moments and account for all logistical issues to both maximise attendance within the stadium and also  viewers watching the broadcast. 

Currently, this process is all done by hand and requires months of human effort to account and allow for all potential issues. 

La Liga also revealed to MailOnline it intends to build on the technology  to help ease the load on players and teams from travelling.

Some teams, such as Tenerife or Mallorca, require flights to their away games and maximising their time in certain localities may level the playing field when it comes to travel time – which is known to affect performance.

An adapted version of the existing technology is designed to help maximise broadcast profit, a key focus for La Liga ls it still anguishes behind the Premier League in terms of revenue from television broadcast.

MediaCoach 

MediaCoach is perhaps responsible for the dominance of Spanish football for the last decade. 

It was first used in La Liga in 2010 and uses a plethora of cameras around every stadium to constantly track and monitor every player to give a range of statistics to the coaching staff. 

Each team has access to the information, provided by firm MediaPro, on not only their own players but the players of every team in the league.

It is used to create heat maps, track distance run and monitor how long they were out of position.

Experts speaking to MailOnline say the information is readily available via a specialist tablet in every team’s dugout and alerts can be installed to notify the coaching staff when a particular milestone has been reached. 

For example, a player with a big Champions league game coming up in a few days – may be restricted to less than 8km distance covered. 

An alarm will sound, notifying the manager and helping inform their decision.

Each game is streamed – with a ten second delay – to computer screens in a Football Manager-style overview of each player’s current location and movements. 

La Liga claims ‘no other football league has a platform like Mediacoach with such an advanced suite of tools’.     

VAR – Video Assistant Referee 

VAR has been used in La Liga since the kick-off of the 2018-2019 season and is due to be introduced to the Premier League later this year. 

The technology has been called a ‘success’ by league representatives and was responsible for 59 modified decisions and used to assess 2,280 incidents. 

It can only be used to review four types of decision: a goal, a case of mistaken identity, offside or a red card offence in a bid to ‘avoid clear and obvious errors’.

VAR is broken down into two main sections: a pitch-side area and a central control room located in Madrid.

A range of camera angles are available to the VAR officials, from at least six to upwards of 20 for bigger games. 

Artificial intelligence is now also being used to create a virtual and accurate offside line in less than a second by aligning with key markers in the stadium. 

Image recognition is constantly being re-calibrated to be kept as accurate as possible and will be used by VAR officials.

The technology is called Xeebra and made by Belgian firm EVS and works alongside broadcasting firm MediaPro to provide remote and on-site officials with as much information as possible. 

Camera angles can be selected, replayed, enlarged, sped up or slowed down to a frame-by-frame speed to ensure the correct decision is made. 

A referee can either ask for the opinion of the VAR or officials can, in a timely manner, recommend a review of the decision. 

The final decision still lies with the on-pitch official despite the feedback from the officials.   

A concept watch was also on display which would allow for clearer communication between the team – often separated by hundreds of miles – when crowd noise affects what a referee can hear. 

It would potentially show symbols or pieces of data to ensure the correct decision is still made.

What is video assistant referee (VAR)?

The Video Assistant Referee is a system which involves several highly-trained match officials that have access to a range of different camera angles.

The small team of qualified referees are watching the game away from the pitch, safely shut away in a room casting an eagle eye over every piece of play.

When trialed by the Bundesliga, VARs were based externally in Cologne, as opposed to inside the match-day stadium. They communicate with the referee on the field of play via a two-way radio.

In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the VAR referees are all based in Moscow, whilst the game may be happening several hundred miles away. 

Here, the officials will have access to 33 different camera angles, including eight in super slow motion and four in ultra slow motion. 

The tech first reared its head on British shores when England faced Germany in a friendly at Wembley, following successful tests in Germany, Italy and the United States.

How does a VAR decision get made?

The referee must consult VAR — only then does the process of analysis of an incident begin. The VAR cannot simply review anything it wants during the match.

The referee draws the outline of a TV screen in the air so everybody knows what’s going on and that VAR is set to be used. 

They then wait to be told what to do, which sometimes includes going to review a decision themselves on an off-pitch monitor.
