In my lifetime, I have had countless fans. And each has had its own set of problems.

There was a tiny white fan that cost £10 from my local hardware shop and was bought in a panic in the middle of a heatwave. It had the disadvantages of making a huge amount of noise while also seeming to blow out no cool air whatsoever. Then there was an industrial-looking silver fan – the type that sits on the floor and blasts wind at models on photoshoots – that I found on the street. This was a fiasco. Imagine, from both a noise but also wind-level perspective, standing a metre-or-so away from a Boeing 787 as it takes off. That was what it was like to sleep next to this fan.

Anyway, the good news is that, last year, I found the perfect fan. Or, rather, my mum found the perfect fan, I used it once at her house, asked her where it was from, and immediately ordered one for myself.

I’ll spare you any suspense. This is it:

The John Lewis 2-in-1 Fan

It’s from John Lewis, it costs £55 and it’s perfect.

What do I like about it? How long do I have? First, it has eight different settings, of which setting five is my favourite. Setting five on this fan is strong enough to cool you down, but not so strong that it’s bothersome. (One of the problems I have encountered with previous fans is that, if the air they produce is too strong, I feel like I am being tickled on the forehead. This sensation is pleasant for maybe three seconds then quickly becomes awful.)

One selling point is the fan's remote

The fan also has a remote, which means you can flit between settings without having to get up and press any buttons yourself.  And you can adjust its height.

But the main benefit is that it is, so, so, silent. Apparently, it’s because the fan has a plastic – rather than a metal – blade. The result is astonishing: on settings one to five, the fan is so quiet you barely know it is there.

The only problem is that it makes a very loud BEEP when you change settings, which disrupts the otherwise peaceful vibe of the fan. But, frankly, setting five is so perfect I never have to deviate from it anyway.

I am not the only person who feels like this. On the John Lewis website there are 476 for this fan; of those, 370 are five stars. They have titles like ‘ridiculously quiet fan’, ‘simply amazing’, ‘best fan I’ve ever had’. One reviewer says ‘all my friends admire the fan’, another says they ‘love this fan so much I bought two more as presents for my family’. My favourite appraisal reads: ‘I cannot praise this fan enough. It may sound daft, but I now have 4 of them, one for each room.’ It doesn’t sound daft at all. In fact, now that the weather’s warmed up, I might do the exact same.
