‘How was last night?’ Texts immigrant Uber driver, 25, sent a woman after he sexually assaulted her

An Indian immigrant Uber driver has pleaded guilty to sexual assault after locking a woman in his Uber when he was supposed to be dropping her home.

Satveer Singh, 25, only let the young victim escape his car after she gave him her mobile number, which he proceeded to contact her on the very next day.

Text message evidence provided in court shows him writing: ‘hi, how was you last night. I hope everything is good,’ followed by another text three hours later reading ‘I think you forget about me’.

Singh had his student visa cancelled after he was charged for the assault, and has spent the last year in custody.

300 of those days were spent on Christmas Island in immigration detention, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

The court heard the attack took place after the 20-year-old victim got in the Uber after a night drinking in Surfers Paradise, on the Gold Coast in September of 2017.

Judge David Kent said the young woman ‘was vulnerable, alone and alcohol effected and the circumstances between the two of you created a position of trust.’

He said Singh breached the position of trust he had with the victim.

Crown prosecutor Michael Connelly said Singh parked in a bay near her house and forced himself on her, locking the car doors.

She was allegedly initially confused by the contact, and kept telling him he shouldn’t have been doing what he was doing, and continued to ask him what he was doing throughout the ordeal.

He bit her lip hard enough to cause bruising.

The court heard Singh proceeding to lift her dress and sexually assault her.

CCTV footage of the car park prove his car was stopped in the bay for 27 minutes.

The court heard when the young woman was finally permitted to leave the car, she sat on the ground and cried.

When confronted by a security guard, Mr Connelly said the guard recalls her ‘rocking and sobbing at the same time. She made the complaint and said ‘I have been raped’.’

Judge Kent sentenced Singh to a three year good behaviour bond, citing the time he’d spent in immigration detention and custody as longer than what he would have been sentenced to.
