If you’re an Australian who has dreamed about travelling to Japan you can now do a portion of it for free thanks to a little-known travel offer. 

‘Japan Airlines is offering FREE domestic flights for international visitors through its new program,’ travel account Alice’s Adventures on Earth said in a video announcing the news.

‘If you book a round trip to Japan on Japan Airlines then you can book one free domestic flight on the same reservation. 

‘It’s perfect for seeing more of Japan’s hidden gems, from historic temples to stunning beaches and snow-capped mountains.’ 

The program is designed to get tourists exploring cities beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, which are the main destinations for many international travellers.

The deal, which is available until October, covers 64 domestic Japanese airports and includes checked baggage on the free flight. 

The offer is open to Aussies as well as citizens of Indonesia, India, China, the US, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Aussies learning of the opportunity didn’t need much encouragement to consider booking a trip to to land of the rising sun. 

‘Wait, this can’t be real?’ one said. 

‘Wow! As if Japan wasn’t tempting enough,’ another added. 

‘I’d love to do this,’ a third chimed in.

A traveller’s six best ‘offbeat’ destinations in Japan

  3. Tochigi, for ‘forest vibes’ and hidden temples
  4. Hokkaido, for ‘breathtaking’ views and seafood

Many were naming their favourite lesser known Japanese cities as possible destinations for adventurous Aussies looking to take advantage of the offer. 

‘I recommend Kyushu or Shinzouka as alternatives to Tokyo,’ one said.

‘Okinawa is the most beautiful place I have ever seen,’ another added. 

‘Niigata also has a bunch of gorgeous scenery and hiking as well,’ a third chimed in. 

Visitors to the country raved about Hokkaido for picturesque settings, ‘amazing’ skiing and some of the best bath houses in the country.

For those looking for travel inspiration to take them even further off the beaten path, Tina Pik, the woman behind hangrybynature shared her six favourite ‘offbeat places’ to visit in Japan.

Her recommendations included capybara watching on the Izu Peninsula and Takayama for luxury bath houses (onsen) and some of the best traditional Japanese food in the country.

‘I never heard of Takayama, now it’s on my bucket list for summer 2024,’ one said.
